They just paid $1 million for a ‘Counter-Strike’ skin. And it doesn’t do anything special

Si estabas pensando en un número de dos cifras, perdona que te corte ahí mismo: una skin para la AK-47 acaba de ser vendida por más de un millón de dólares. ¿Dispara mejor? ¿Hace cabriolas? ¿Te vuelve invisible? Por supuesto que no. No hace nada. Hala, a pasar por caja.

How much would you pay to have a unique skin that sets you apart from the rest of the gamers playing Counter-Strike? If you were thinking of a two-digit number, sorry to cut you off there: A skin for the AK-47 has just been sold for over a million dollars. Does it shoot better? Does it do somersaults? Does it make you invisible? No. It doesn’t really do anything. Well, time to pay up.

Let’s start

The skin in question is the StatTrak Factory New AK-47 pattern 661 (Blue Gem color). And why does it cost over $1 million? Well, because no one had seen it until this year, when it became public, and for some reason, everyone believed it should cost what it cost. Looking at this from the outside is a bit like someone who sees the prices of high fashion or abstract paintings for the first time.

Apparently, this skin costs so much because it gives the weapon a metallic, shining look, and also because the color is the hardest to find in ‘Counter-Strike’ matches. It may be worth mentioning that this is not the most expensive skin that has been sold in the game, but it’s the most expensive one sold publicly. And if you’re thinking “I wish I had $1 million so I could buy that skin and show it off in gameplay”, well, hey, I truly hope you achieve your dreams. I mean that in all sincerity.

Free to play Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies out on Steam in Fall 2014

This fall will see the release of Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies, officially licensed by Valve, and developed in collaboration with Korean company Nexon. It will be available via Steam on Windows.

Currently, there are neither trailers nor screenshots of Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies, but Nexon has explained a little about what we can expect. The zombies in the game will be aggressive and fast moving, not the slow, lumbering traditional ones. It will have new weapons and game modes, although classic modes ‘Hostage Rescue’ and ‘Bomb Diffusion’ will remain in the game.

How zombies will affect the classic team based play of the game is unclear. Coincidentally, one of the most popular multiplayer zombie action games is by Valve itself – the Left 4 Dead series. This could be an example of how Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies might play, with players teaming up against swarms of computer controlled zombies.

Nexon is also responsible for Counter-Strike Online, another officially licensed Counter Strike game which is free to play, unlike Valve’s more recent Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies will be launched worldwide, and supports English, German, French, Italian, Polish and Russian languages.

It’s simple, fast and fun online first person shooting at its purest, and when I reviewed the game earlier this year, I was happy to give it 9/10. The great news is that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is free to play this weekend, on Mac or PC, until 1pm PST on Sunday.

If you don’t have Steam installed, you can download and install it here. You need to create an account, but it’s completely free.
