GTA: San Andreas out today on iOS, Android and Windows Phone

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is being released on iOS, Android and Windows Phone throughout today. The violent 2005 sandbox game arrives a year after GTA: Vice City was also brought to mobile devices.

The game is currently available on the App Store worldwide, but we’re still waiting for it to appear on the Google Play store. On iOS it requires an iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 5th gen, iPad 2 or newer device. It weighs in a 1.5 GB, which isn’t bad for such a huge game that is supposedly better looking than the original release.

GTA: San Andreas comes with support for external controllers, as well as a redesigned touchscreen control system. While today’s mobile phone’s can easily run a game like San Andreas, Rockstar has so far failed to get touch controls right in its GTA ports. Both GTA III and Vice City were spoiled by awkward controls, so we’re hoping they are better this time round.

It’s easy to forget how much of a big deal San Andreas was in 2004. The game world is huge, and it was the first time a GTA protagonist could swim or be customized. San Andreas is full of mini games and activities to keep you entertained while you’re not following the main storyline, which itself is an epic journey through its three cities and countryside.

GTA San Andreas coming to iOS, Android and Windows Phone this December

GTA San Andreas coming to iOS, Android and Windows Phone this December

Following GTA III and Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to iOS, Android and Windows Phone this December.

Rockstar’s 2004 open world epic has always been a fan favorite. With it’s extensive car and character customization, huge map (for the time) and three very different cities to explore, San Andreas is a game you can truly get lost in. Much of the criticism of GTA IV came from disappointment that features in San Andreas were missing from Niko Bellic’s adventure’s in Liberty City.

Next month you’ll be able to return to CJ and San Andreas on touchscreen devices. Rockstar has optimized the game, giving it remastered graphics with better, more dynamic shadows and a longer ‘draw distance’ – so you’ll be able to see further into the distance.

More importantly Rockstar claims the touchscreen controls in GTA: San Andreas will be much better. Originally designed around gamepad controls, translating that to touch screens has been awkward in the past. GTA III and Vice City both suffered from fiddly controls, so we hope San Andreas improves things. The game will also have full controller support, so you should be able to play the game as originally intended if you have the right hardware.

New high resolution texture pack released for GTA San Andreas

2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is still really popular with the modding community, and a new ‘enhanced’ version of a high resolution texture pack has just been released. Updating a mod from 2010, the HRT Pack 1.3: Enhanced Edition improves the look of San Andreas, replacing the original textures of Las Venturas, Los Santos, San Fierro and some of the countryside with new higher resolution graphics.

As well as building and environment textures, the mod adds new objects as well. The baseball stadium in Las Venturas can be visited using this mod, and more people should appear walking on the streets. There are two versions of the mod – manual and automatic. The automatic version comes with an installer and is much easier to use. Check out this video of what you can expect from GTA San Andreas HRT Pack 1.3: Enhanced Edition:

The creator of the mod, Flame1251 (on the Moddb site) has been working on a totally new high resolution mod for San Andreas, HRT Pack 1.4. This project will replace all textures in GTA San Andreas, and include improved models (characters and cars, for example), with the aim of preserving the feel of the orginal game, but with more modern graphics. Flame1251 expects to complete this this year.
