What is the “good” ending of Life Is Strange? Their new game makes it clear… either one

In the end, all the decisions you made throughout the first ‘Life is Strange’ (which made the game a special and unique experience) led to only two possible endings: either let the storm destroy everything but save your friend, or save everything but let her perish in the initial shooting. For years, fans have wondered what the official and real timeline is, especially now that a continuation of Max’s adventures is coming. And the answer is… both.

No ending

In ‘Life is Strange: Double Exposure’, the developing studio, Deck Nine, considered it important that the game they made respected both endings, as if they were not contradictory to each other. “There is no canonical ending to the first game”, they comment, thus avoiding speaking in terms of a “true ending” and not invalidating players’ experiences, which, frankly, is quite clever.

On October 29th we’ll know to what extent both endings have been respected, or if they will simply avoid talking about the subject in order to move forward with Max’s story as an adult. Apparently, the game has been careful to respect both decisions in thoughts, diary entries, messages, and interactions with other characters, with a protagonist who will end her first chapter alone with another impossible decision to make.

It’s also true that this new game will be about two different timelines converging at the same time, so it’s possible that it finds success by playing with what fans want to know: whether Chloe gets the chance to appear at some point and finally make us happy by having a much desired and longed-for reunion. Many years have passed since their last ‘Life is Strange’. We just hope they don’t disappoint.

Square is to blame for us never seeing the perfect continuation of ‘Life Is Strange’

For years, we have bitterly wondered why there has never been a true sequel to the game, instead of those with the same title as the franchise but set outside the universe that were released later.

Do you remember ‘Life Is Strange’? It was an indie hit from Square, which had two possible endings (in case you don’t know the ending) and has slightly expanded through comics… but not through video games. And for years, we have wondered, bitterly, why there has never been a true sequel to the game instead of those with the same title of the franchise but outside the universe that were released afterwards.

In Square they are grid-like

Michael Koch, director of the first game, has now stated that they only intended to release that one, which had a subsequent problem: they did not think about sequels when writing the story and characters. “When the game was a success, Square Enix asked us for a second part. We managed to fit Life Is Strange 2 into the same universe, and even create interesting connections, but we could never create intricate and complex connections or sequels between the games.”

And the problem, in part, was Square’s own fault: “We would have loved to have more freedom to decide where the characters and plots were going to go”. So, Square, who owns the rights and intellectual property, decided what was going to be done… And what wasn’t.

Or in other words: “Square Enix planned and supervised the expansion, they hired Deck Nine to make other games in the franchise apart from ours, they found authors to write the comics and created their own plan for this universe.” So yes, if ‘Life Is Strange’ is not going as you want… it’s Square Enix’s fault.

Eight years later, ‘Life is Strange’ has just achieved a new record

Now, eight years after its release and after two sequels, a prequel and a spin-off, the first game has broken an impressive record.

There are few games that have genuinely made me cry. Some of them are ‘To The Moon’, ‘Before Your Eyes’, ‘This War of Mine’, or, of course, ‘Life is Strange’, an episodic game whose climactic ending no one would have guessed when starting. Whichever one you chose. Now, eight years after its release and after two sequels, a prequel, and a spin-off, the first game has set an impressive record.

Return to Arcadia Bay

Since the release of its first chapter in 2014 (because yes, the episodes were released every month and a half), ‘Life is Strange’ has consistently exceeded all the expectations set for it. In fact, originally, it was a project flying so low that only 15 people were working on it, though the number increased when Square Enix stepped in to produce it. By July 2015, they had already sold a million copies, but its impact was far from fading.

According to the official Twitter account, over 20 million people have played ‘Life is Strange’ since its release. While there’s no specific source cited, it’s a credible figure: the game has continued to be popular over the years (especially with the remaster and various compilations), becoming something every game developer aims for today—a timeless game that can be enjoyed even when it’s not “trendy.”

It’s true that the sequels of the game, which have already left the hands of Don’t Nod to go to Deck Nine Games, haven’t caused much stir, but they have continued to perform well in sales. For instance, ‘True Colors’ had the best debut in terms of money earned for the entire franchise in 2021, and these 20 million unique users that have just been announced could renew interest in it. Do we have ‘Life is Strange’ for a while longer? Well, all that’s left is to cross our fingers.

Life is Strange is back. The latest entry in the coming-of-age mystery series has put in strong showings at E3, Gamescom, and PAX West.

Based on everything that’s been revealed so far, it looks to be a big improvement on everything fans have come to love about the series. Get a taste of the game below with the first 20 minutes of gameplay, then read on for everything we know so far about Life is Strange 2.

New Characters

Previous games in the series focused on high school students Max Caulfield and Chloe Price and the mystery surrounding star student Rachel Amber’s mysterious disappearance. The twist was that Max had the supernatural ability to turn back time, which led to some mind-bending time travel moments as the two girls worked to unravel the mystery.

This is the first game in the series to depart from the two characters, instead focusing on Sean and Daniel Diaz. Players will be controlling Sean, a 16-year-old living in Seattle with his dad and younger brother Daniel. In the video above, we see Sean dealing with typical teenage problems: talking to his crush, asking Dad for spending cash, and messing with his brother. His problems are about to get a lot bigger, though.

An unfortunate incident with a cop ends with the cop dead and the two brothers on the run across the United States, heading for their father’s hometown in Mexico. Here’s the mysterious part: we don’t know what kind of powers Sean has… or even if they’re Sean’s powers.

From the trailer above, we can assume that it’s some kind of telekinesis ability that sends both the cop and his squad car flying. It’s hard to tell, though, if it’s Sean that sends out the telekinetic blast or Daniel. If it’s Daniel, it would certainly fit with the theme of the game, which DONTNOD has stated will be focusing on Sean and the protective foster-father figure he has to become for Daniel.

Improved Story

Unlike the past two games, which focused on the singular fictional town of Arcadia Bay, Oregon, this game is structured like a road movie, following the brothers on their journey down the West Coast. The development team has cited both “Into the Wild” and “Of Mice and Men” as inspirations. Like previous games, the story will be episodic, with each episode focusing on a particular location on the brother’s journey. The first episode, “Seattle,” will focus on Sean and Daniel’s day-to-day life in that city and the incident that sets them on their journey.

One of the most criticized elements of the first game was the dialogue, which was littered with cringe-inducing outdated slang and forced meme references that sounded more like an adult trying to be hip than the actual way that teens talk to each other. This was greatly improved in Life is Strange: Before the Storm, and has continued to be improved for Life is Strange 2. The dialogue here is natural and the characters are distinct and feel developed, making the heartbreaking moments hit that much harder.

The story of this game is also going to tie into the story of The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. Captain Spirit was a free game released back in June to serve as a sort of teaser trailer for Life is Strange 2, showcasing the improved graphics, gameplay, and dialogue. The game followed Chris, a young boy with a troubled father, as he adopts his superhero alter ego to solve problems around the house. Eventually, Chris discovers his imaginary powers are all too real. DONTNOD has confirmed that Chris will be making an appearance in LiS2, which begs the question: will Max and Chloe be making an appearance too?

Streamlined Gameplay

Gameplay itself has also received an overhaul for the series’ latest entry. Now running on Unreal Engine 4, Life is Strange has received a huge graphical overhaul. Animations are smoother and characters are more detailed; one major criticism of the first entry in the series was that lip movements weren’t well-synced with dialogue, leading to some weird uncanny valley moments. Here, everything flows and movements are much less stilted.

Dialogue trees and object interaction prompts are also more streamlined to make the game environment seem less cluttered. A big part of Life is Strange is exploring and interacting with the incredibly rich and detailed environments. The interaction interface and changes to the dialogue tree allow players to fully explore these environments, easily find hidden details and Easter Eggs, and never get overwhelmed.

As we already know, we’ve yet to see the actual nature of the powers in this game. With Max, a simple button push would allow players to reverse the time stream to a moment of their choosing. How the telekinetic powers in this game will behave is still something of a mystery: whether it’ll players controlling the powers directly, commanding Daniel to use them, or not interacting with the powers at all, as was the case with Chloe in Life is Strange: Before the Storm. It’s a major aspect of the game that has yet to be fully revealed, and it seems that we’ll have to wait until the first episode releases to find out exactly how these powers will fit into the gameplay as a whole.

Like the first two games, Life is Strange 2 seems poised to be a poignant and compelling title, and the improvements that have already been showcased are sure to turn heads. Episode 1 releases today for Microsoft, PS4, and Xbox One.
