¡Papá Araña!

Ultimate Spider-Man #13, written by Jonathan Hickman with illustrations by Marco Checchetto and colors by Matthew Wilson, begins with the revelation that Peter has been replaced by an artificial intelligence suit. This suit not only imitates Peter but has also taken an active role in raising his son, Richard, whom it is teaching to be Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Peter and his friend Harry Osborn have been captured by Kraven, a member of the Sinister Six, and taken to the Savage Land.

Where are you going, Charles Xavier?

The saga will be called Manhunt and will take place over eight comics in March 2025. More specifically, it will be a crossover between The Uncanny X-Men, NYX, Storm, X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force, and Exceptional X-Men, with a final title, X-Manhunt Omega, that will wrap everything up. Considering that currently Charles Xavier lives in Graymalkin prison, a center for mutants built in his former school, it’s easy to get an idea of what will happen next: he will escape and create chaos among the mutants. How and why? That remains to be seen.

After all, he is imprisoned for crimes against humanity that occurred at the end of the Krakoa era, and his former students will hesitate whether to side with him or comply with international orders. Some want to forgive him, others are not ready, and meanwhile, Xavier will try to accomplish a very personal mission whose details have not been disclosed.

As always, from Marvel they promise that the world will change forever when Xavier makes his final decision, but, frankly, it’s not the first time he’s done something like this nor the first time he’s about to die (or, directly, dies) in the comics. With the alliance between X-Men and Avengers hanging by a thread, will this be a filler saga or will it really change something in the always fragile Marvel ecosystem?

Punisher Mangione

It was the year 2000 when Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon, and Jimmy Palmiotti tried to revitalize the story of Punisher, which had been in limbo with very short collections for a while. The vigilante from Marvel, always with his gun ready to dispense his justice where the courts cannot (or do not want to) returned at the hands of a team that did not hold back in violence and blood, and at the beginning of the century, that was saying a lot.

In that story, Frank Castle returned to action, discovering that his actions had created antiheroes like Mister Payback. And what did this man do? He took revenge against the CEOs of companies by murdering them throughout New York. Does it sound familiar? Moreover, he had a manifesto: after shooting one of these bosses live, he spoke to the television cameras saying “They call me a criminal, although all I do is execute trash that feeds off the blood of millions of people (…) and run American businesses like a gigantic death machine”.

Of course, Punisher had a problem with him: in his killings, they also accidentally killed up to four innocents, and he was not willing to allow it… so he finished them off with clean shots. And regardless of what anyone thinks, we can see Luigi Mangione in all these panels… And fortunately, that ending doesn’t seem likely.

Zeus, I invoke you!

We all associate the name Thor with the Marvel character, the protagonist of four movies and a member of The Avengers, who has been wielding his hammer around the world since 1962. The truth is that Wright Lincoln came up with this mythological god during the first five issues of the magazine. In these stories, Thor decides to pass his power to an earthling named Grant Farrel, who is contemplating suicide because Glenda, his secret love, ignores him. Transformed into Thor, Grant saves his beloved, and she falls in love with him, but without knowing—oh!—that behind the hero’s body is the man she has rejected several times. The comic itself is not consistent, as it sometimes claims he transforms into Thor’s body, other times he appears alongside him, sometimes it’s a silent transformation, and other times he is accompanied by a lightning bolt…

His powers are invulnerability, super strength, flight, and also, shooting lightning and using it to cover long distances. Occasionally, he would become a giant, discover new powers (such as a glove that increased his strength), end up fighting against Nazis and. More specifically, he squares off against Doctor Hsin, his nemesis, who intended to kill the entire planet, only to repopulate it with his strange creatures, in the style of Doctor Moreau.

The adventures only lasted five months. He was briefly replaced by another character using the same name (Dynamite Thor) and was never heard from again until, two decades later. Thor Odinson appeared for the first time in issue 83 of Journey Into Mystery. The rest, as they say, is history (both mythological and Marvel).

Dating with Xavier

In issue 2 of Uncanny X-Men, written by Gail Simone for Marvel, we will have a journey to the past where we will see the Professor’s first girlfriend, before Moira, a girl named Sarah whom he fell in love with at first sight, and apparently it was mutual. The first release of the new era of ‘X-Men’ tried to change things in the weirdest way possible: by removing the last page and replacing it with a QR code.

Once upon a time (that is, a couple of months ago) reading comic books in physical format was very simple: you bought it, you read it, and that was it. As an alternative, you could wait for the comic books to be collected in a volume a few months later to enjoy the complete adventures at a slightly cheaper price. Or, if you preferred digital copies, you had different possibilities to enjoy your hobby. Until now.

Marvel, like many publishers, has seen business is dropping and comic books are not selling as they used to, partly because a day before the new releases are available for sale, someone has already scanned them or posted the twists and best panels on Reddit and various websites. There is nothing that can be done against this, and it reflects the current state of things. As a result, the first release of the new era of ‘X-Men’ tried to change things in the weirdest way possible: by removing the last page and replacing it with a QR code.

With that code, readers can access the final page, which tends to be the one that holds the cliffhangers and nods to the future. But it turns out this won’t be the only time it happens, as Tom Breevort explained in his newsletter: they basically imagined it as an extra page that wouldn’t be released until the same day of the launch to avoid spoilers… and they will continue to do so throughout the different titles of the mutant franchise.

Some fans already believe – with some reason – that Breevort and Marvel are shooting themselves in the foot with physical comic book editions, urging the publishers to go entirely digital. After all, what does it matter if we already have to read part of our physical comic on a screen? Furthermore, they have already announced that those pages will be printed in the compilation volumes they release months later. In this plan, who would be willing to pay for something more expensive and incomplete?

The industry is changing at full speed, kids don’t read comics (not in physical form, at least) and the internet is destroying novelty and surprise. Creating a QR code definitely won’t solve anything beyond giving a false sense of modernity and innovation. This is the 21st century.
