The most famous Batman meme goes beyond a slap: how a story from 60 years ago shaped current pop culture

Surely you know the comic strip. It is probably the DC drawing that the most people have seen around the world, although very few know the author and, of course, even fewer have read the comic from which it comes: Batman slaps Robin with all kinds of different phrases (which, over the years, have gradually lost their charm). The first version of the meme, which many believed to be real, showed Robin saying “Hey, Batman, what did your parents buy you for Christm–?” only to receive a punch from the hero who screams: “My parents are deaaaad!” Well, so […]

Surely you know the comic strip. It is, probably, the DC drawing that the most people have seen around the world, although very few know the author and, of course, even fewer have read the comic from which it comes: Batman slaps Robin with all kinds of different phrases (which, over the years, have gradually lost their charm). The first version of the meme, which many believed to be real, showed Robin saying “Hey, Batman, what did your parents buy you for Christ–?” only to receive a punch from the hero who shouts: “My parents are deaaaad!”. Well, none of this is true. But, looking at reality, I wish it were.

An Imaginary Comic Strip!

To find the origin of this vignette, one does not need to look in the pop art of contemporary artists or in modern comics of the character: one must go way back in time, when DC Comics had little competition, back in November 1965. At that time, the series ‘World’s Finest’ was releasing its issue 153, on the cover of which Batman was throwing a kryptonite batarang at Superman, shouting “You’ve fallen into my trap, Superman! How sweet is revenge!”. Of course, as was customary in these types of stories, it was made clear from the outset that this was an imaginary story and none of this would affect the canon of the super-friends.

“Discover what would have happened if Superman and Batman had become bitter enemies, on opposite sides of the law!” The main story of the comic – there is another one, taken from the DC archives, along with numerous comic strips and ads – was exactly that. In fact, it is even set on “an imaginary day.” In its pages, Batman believes that Superman killed his father, who had just created an anti-kryptonite serum, and seeks revenge against him, while his enemy is busy fighting ants in the jungle (without harming them, of course). Anyway, things from the 60s.

In the end, Batman allies with Lex Luthor, discovers that he was the one who stole the serum, and sacrifices himself to save Superman, bringing an end to this, let’s call it, epic. The thing would have passed without a hitch (there are hundreds of comics with alternative stories where one of the heroes becomes a villain and fights against his friend) and would have been forgotten in history if it weren’t for page 5 gifting us the famous panel. Only, in this case, it has another context: the Masked Crusader shares his thirst for revenge with Robin, and he responds that he must be mistaken. What is the reaction? Well, a slap, of course.

My parents are deaaad!

In the original comic strip, Batman says “Don’t tell me I’m wrong, kid… Proving that Superman is guilty is my whole mission in life!” and Robin responds “Ow! Batman, your grief has obsessed you with this idea of revenge. I beg you, let it go!”. The original image, in fact, is inverted from what we now know as the meme, with Robin on the right. Its creator, by the way, was Curt Swan (scripted by Edmond Hamilton), although at that time it was not customary to credit artists. In any case, the comic strip did not have much impact.

Until June 10, 2008, when someone uploaded the already modified image to the SFWChan forum. It only took a week to go viral on Tumblr and Ebaumsworld. Soon, there was no one who didn’t know the meme… Or who, thanks to a generator that was launched the following year, could create their own, forever modifying pop culture and adding a new piece to the Batman lore as important today as the Spider-man pointing at each other. In fact, if it weren’t so evidently complex to justify, we would have already seen it in some DC movie.

Over time, the meme was modified to include other characters, change their appearance, and even talk about the meme’s own death, leading to the current moment where it is clearly out of use… but anyone can use it and make it recognizable at first glance. The magic of the old Internet was that no one knew where the next viral thing could come from. A comic from 1965 that absolutely no one knows? Of course.

Nowadays, even memes, like social networks and any website, are much more sanitized. It’s hard to find something truly original beyond the users’ imagination without falling into shitposting or brainrot, and it’s a shame because, deep down, that was what gave meaning to the Internet. Who knows. Deep down, it’s tough to feel nostalgia for a meme that we came to loathe. From an era so full of creativity as well as boredom. From an unpredictable Internet. From Batman slapping.

A couple of pages ago, in a galaxy very, very close…

This comic reveals that Vader returned to Tatooine, where Watto had owned Anakin Skywalker and his mother, Shmi, as slaves. Watto, a Toydarian, was immune to Jedi mind tricks and owned a second-hand goods shop, made his last appearance in Attack of the Clones. This death has sparked a strong reaction on social media, where fans have shared condolences and tributes through social networks.

In the comic, it is shown that Darth Vader seeks revenge against Watto, something logical considering their complicated relationship. In The Phantom Menace, Anakin won his freedom in a pod race after a deal between Qui-Gon Jinn and Watto. Since then, the character has remained in the memory of fans, despite his limited screen time. The devastation over his death has been palpable, as demonstrated by several tweets remembering Watto as a small businessman on Tatooine, leaving a significant void in popular culture.

While social media mourns the loss of this character, the Star Wars franchise continues with new projects. It has been confirmed that The Mandalorian & Grogu will premiere on May 22, 2026, featuring Jeremy Allen White and possibly Sigourney Weaver. Additionally, it is expected that this new installment, among other upcoming Star Wars content, will continue to expand the rich universe created by George Lucas.

4-Hellboy: A Christmas Underground

In 1997, Mike Mignola created a fabulous story in which he visits a dying woman on Christmas Eve 1989 who mistakes Hellboy for Santa Claus. He agrees to give her daughter, who died five years earlier, a Christmas gift. Surprisingly, he finds her and gives her the gift, a necklace with a cross. Of course, things end up in chaos, but it is, in its own way, charming, beautiful, and strange. Just as a good Christmas should be, indeed.

3-Batman: Noël

Of course, Batman also had to have his Christmas version, in a Gotham that seems to have been born to have trees and garlands within its gothic darkness. Here, the masked guardian will experience a kind of Christmas Carol (the legendary novel by Charles Dickens) with the definition of heroism at stake. With Lee Bermejo on script and art, it’s hard not to fall in love with this comic with spectacular page design.

2-The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special

The anti-Christmas comic par excellence: the Easter Bunny is tired of being a second fiddle, so he hires Lobo to take out Santa Claus, whom we see smoking a gigantic cigar on his sofa, next to a gorilla. Loose limbs around, dead elves in the corners, dark humor, swear words, gunshots and all sorts of nonsense typical of this comic from 1991, absolutely essential in every respectable home.

1-Hawkeye

Some might say that this fantastic comic by Fraction and Aja is not Christmas-themed, but… When does it take place, at least in part? Huh? Exactly: at Christmas. And look, even though it doesn’t have Santa Claus or gift-giving, you get a masterpiece. After all, that’s what these holidays are for, right? To give and share, to receive good advice and discover new things. This is my gift to you. Ho, ho, ho. You’re welcome.

Punisher Mangione

It was the year 2000 when Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon, and Jimmy Palmiotti tried to revitalize the story of Punisher, which had been in limbo with very short collections for a while. The vigilante from Marvel, always with his gun ready to dispense his justice where the courts cannot (or do not want to) returned at the hands of a team that did not hold back in violence and blood, and at the beginning of the century, that was saying a lot.

In that story, Frank Castle returned to action, discovering that his actions had created antiheroes like Mister Payback. And what did this man do? He took revenge against the CEOs of companies by murdering them throughout New York. Does it sound familiar? Moreover, he had a manifesto: after shooting one of these bosses live, he spoke to the television cameras saying “They call me a criminal, although all I do is execute trash that feeds off the blood of millions of people (…) and run American businesses like a gigantic death machine”.

Of course, Punisher had a problem with him: in his killings, they also accidentally killed up to four innocents, and he was not willing to allow it… so he finished them off with clean shots. And regardless of what anyone thinks, we can see Luigi Mangione in all these panels… And fortunately, that ending doesn’t seem likely.

Are you really telling me this?

It has been 30 years since the first resurrection of Ben Reilly, and the character has undergone continuous changes in name, powers, aliases, and status quo. So much so that Jonathan Hickman, in his Ultimate Spider-man (the best current comic about the Web-Slinger), has made it clear that he does not intend to add more fuel to his background. Thus, in issue 10, he has made a simple nod indicating to readers that there would be no clones of any kind here.

J. Jonah Jameson and Ben Parker (yes, Uncle Ben) are writing a news article for their online newspaper, The Paper, about Wilson Fisk. But they don’t want to write it under either of their names so that Kingpin’s power doesn’t fall on them, so they decide to invent a name. Exactly, Ben Reilly. And you have no idea how much of a relief it is to know that there will be no clones in this origin adventure. It’s about time.

22 years before Thor was born in Marvel, there was already another character with the same name… And no one remembers

Zeus, I invoke you!

We all associate the name Thor with the Marvel character, the protagonist of four movies and a member of The Avengers, who has been wielding his hammer around the world since 1962. The truth is that Wright Lincoln came up with this mythological god during the first five issues of the magazine. In these stories, Thor decides to pass his power to an earthling named Grant Farrel, who is contemplating suicide because Glenda, his secret love, ignores him. For some reason, the son of Zeus decides that he is worthy of wielding his hammer. Well. That’s his opinion.

Transformed into Thor, Grant saves his beloved, and she falls in love with him, but without knowing—oh!—that behind the hero’s body is the man she has rejected several times. The comic itself is not consistent, as it sometimes claims he transforms into Thor’s body, other times he appears alongside him, sometimes it’s a silent transformation, and other times he is accompanied by a lightning bolt…

His powers are invulnerability, super strength, flight, and also, shooting lightning and using it to cover long distances. Occasionally, he would become a giant, discover new powers (such as a glove that increased his strength), end up fighting against Nazis and. More specifically, he squares off against Doctor Hsin, his nemesis, who intended to kill the entire planet, only to repopulate it with his strange creatures, in the style of Doctor Moreau.

The adventures only lasted five months. He was briefly replaced by another character using the same name (Dynamite Thor) and was never heard from again until, two decades later. Thor Odinson appeared for the first time in issue 83 of Journey Into Mystery. The rest, as they say, is history (both mythological and Marvel).

From now on, Marvel comics will have a QR code to view the final page, and nobody understands why

The first release of the new era of ‘X-Men’ tried to change things in the weirdest way possible: by removing the last page and replacing it with a QR code.

Once upon a time (that is, a couple of months ago) reading comic books in physical format was very simple: you bought it, you read it, and that was it. As an alternative, you could wait for the comic books to be collected in a volume a few months later to enjoy the complete adventures at a slightly cheaper price. Or, if you preferred digital copies, you had different possibilities to enjoy your hobby. Until now.

MaQRvel

Marvel, like many publishers, has seen business is dropping and comic books are not selling as they used to, partly because a day before the new releases are available for sale, someone has already scanned them or posted the twists and best panels on Reddit and various websites. There is nothing that can be done against this, and it reflects the current state of things. As a result, the first release of the new era of ‘X-Men’ tried to change things in the weirdest way possible: by removing the last page and replacing it with a QR code.

With that code, readers can access the final page, which tends to be the one that holds the cliffhangers and nods to the future. But it turns out this won’t be the only time it happens, as Tom Breevort explained in his newsletter: they basically imagined it as an extra page that wouldn’t be released until the same day of the launch to avoid spoilers… and they will continue to do so throughout the different titles of the mutant franchise.

Some fans already believe – with some reason – that Breevort and Marvel are shooting themselves in the foot with physical comic book editions, urging the publishers to go entirely digital. After all, what does it matter if we already have to read part of our physical comic on a screen? Furthermore, they have already announced that those pages will be printed in the compilation volumes they release months later. In this plan, who would be willing to pay for something more expensive and incomplete?

The industry is changing at full speed, kids don’t read comics (not in physical form, at least) and the internet is destroying novelty and surprise. Creating a QR code definitely won’t solve anything beyond giving a false sense of modernity and innovation. This is the 21st century.

Superman introduces a mysterious new Superwoman by his side, but we have all guessed who she is

Lois Lane first appeared in a comic book in June 1938, 86 years ago, and, as you can guess, she has experienced all kinds of things and suffered misfortunes over the decades, especially in the “golden age” where she had her own comic book title, which lasted 137 issues and featured some of the most bizarre covers in the history of comics. And the new modern times haven’t exactly forgotten about her…

What a (super) woman!

The new comic series, Superman, has been announcing for a while that a new Superwoman was coming who would fight alongside our hero, but her identity would be very mysterious…if it weren’t for the comic’s own synopsis revealing that it is Lois Lane. And this is not the first time she has gained powers: in fact, she has already been Superwoman not long ago, in 2016, during the “Rebirth” era.

But hey, the first time the superheroine’s suit was tested was in issue 60 of “Action Comics” and the most memorable one was in the epic “All-Star Superman.” So, it’s not a surprise to anyone that now, suddenly, she has powers again. In the end, in the comics of DC and Marvel, everything changes… to going back to being the same.
