Overwatch is no longer what it used to be. It is very difficult to stay in such a saturated market for so long. In a recent interview, Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, addressed the challenge of maintaining a shooter in a market where free-to-play games dominate the scene. Keller stated that operating a non-free shooting game would be very, very difficult today, as the price of around 60 euros represents a significant barrier for players. This difficulty is evident in the recent failure of Concord, which tried to compete in a space saturated with cost-free alternatives.

Keller emphasized that the current business model not only affects the financial viability of the game but also influences its design. He acknowledged that, although many of the design philosophies of the original Overwatch are valid, some need to be updated to adapt to the evolution of the audience. When a new hero is introduced, it takes almost no time for people to master it, he stated, emphasizing the need to introduce significant changes to existing heroes, such as improvements that can be used during matches.
The Overwatch 2 team is working on improving the experience of the old heroes by introducing perks that players can use throughout matches, adding a layer of complexity that can be quickly assimilated. This initiative is expected to materialize in Season 15, which is scheduled to launch on February 18.
Additionally, Keller welcomed the growing competition in the genre, citing Marvel Rivals as a new competitor that offers a similar approach. The director expressed that, until now, Overwatch had never faced such a close rival, which could encourage innovation and enhance the player experience.
