The development of Bungie’s upcoming game, Marathon, has faced significant setbacks that have impacted both team morale and the release date. Significant delays have occurred due to negative feedback during playtesting and the loss of stolen artistic assets, which created an internal crisis at the studio. Joseph Cross, former art director, left his position in December 2025 after six years at the company and recently shared his thoughts on the game’s perception in the digital space.
A great game, according to your perspective
In an interview with Mikhail Klimentov from ReaderGrev, Cross commented that as development progressed, online feedback shifted from mostly positive to negative, creating what he described as “spells” of changing perception. Despite this adversity, Cross remained optimistic about the art created by his team, stating that he considers it the most important aspect of his work and that he remains true to his artistic vision. “I think we did something really cool, and I’m sure it will be successful,” he declared.
However, Cross also admitted that the pressure to launch a product within a limited timeframe can inhibit creativity, making teams feel they cannot take risks. This anxiety is amplified by the recent failure of Concord, another Sony game that was shut down just weeks after its launch, raising doubts about the viability of funding long-term projects in the video game industry.
Despite the challenges, Cross emphasized the importance of maintaining faith in the team’s artistic experience, noting that any great commercial work faces a level of skepticism. “Until it exists,” he concluded, referring to the inevitability of doubt that accompanies creative productions.
