In a revelation that has surprised many, Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to portray the villain Doctor Doom in the upcoming films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This news was confirmed during last year’s Comic Con, leaving fans and some cast members, like Tom Hiddleston, completely shocked. Hiddleston, who reprises his role as Loki, expressed that he had no prior knowledge of Downey Jr.’s return, sharing his surprise on the podcast Happy Sad Confused.
Hiddleton the first surprised
The British actor recounted how, upon hearing the news, he rushed to contact Kevin Feige, Marvel’s creative director, sending him a message full of exclamations. Hiddleston emphasized that “Robert is synonymous with the MCU” and that bringing him back to the franchise is an exciting event, as he will be able to explore different nuances in his character.
Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released in theaters on May 1, 2026, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU, promises to offer a new perspective within the story of the Marvel universe. Although Hiddleston could not reveal details about the plot, he expressed his satisfaction at being part of the team again and noted that the development of his character has grown as he himself has evolved as an actor.
There are also speculations among fans about the return of Loki, especially after the events of the second season of his eponymous series. In this context, Hiddleston emphasized that keeping secrets within Marvel is complicated, recalling the experiences of other actors, like Tom Holland, with the same situation. Undoubtedly, the return of Downey Jr. and Hiddleston generates high expectations for the future development of the franchise.
