Nintendo has once again surprised fans of its latest console with an innovative feature related to battery management on the Nintendo Switch 2. In a recent post on the Nintendo Today app, the Japanese company announced that players will be able to limit the system’s battery charge to 90%. This option, which can be activated from the console’s menu, aims to mitigate battery degradation over time, a growing concern among users and manufacturers of electronic devices.
A way to preserve battery integrity in the long term
Although it may seem illogical to restrict a device’s charge to less than 100%, studies conducted by various technology companies have shown that keeping battery charge between 20% and 80% is optimal for prolonging its lifespan. Charging the battery to the top can, in the long run, reduce its maximum capacity and negatively affect its performance. Above 80-90%, lithium-ion cells can suffer unnecessary stress, resulting in a decrease in the device’s autonomy.
This functionality of limiting charging is becoming a common practice in the industry, although not universally. While fast charging has been established in many devices, the ability to restrict maximum charging is a measure that many users will appreciate in the future, as it contributes to the longevity of their devices. With the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has once again demonstrated its commitment to the quality and lifespan of its products, innovating in areas where many other manufacturers have yet to take similar steps.
With this move, the company could be charting a path towards a better user experience and greater care for the sustainability of its devices in the long term, an aspect increasingly valued by modern consumers.
