Woody Allen has expressed his interest in directing a new film with Donald Trump, whom he previously directed in 1998 in Celebrity. During a recent appearance on Bill Maher’s podcast Club Random, Allen highlighted his experience working with the former president, describing him as a kind professional with a great instinct for show business. “It was a pleasure working with him; he did everything right and has a true talent for show business,” commented Allen, who has been looking for new job opportunities after his last project, A Lucky Break.
The President of the USA is in a vital situation perhaps incompatible with action
Although Allen has shown admiration for Trump as an actor, his political preferences are clear: he voted for Kamala Harris and has expressed his disagreement with many of the former president’s policies. Still, the director has not hidden his desire to work with him again, despite the difficulties that entails given his current position as president. “If he let me direct him now that he is president, I think I could do wonders,” he stated, although he admitted that this possibility is unlikely.
Trump made his film debut in 1989 with a cameo in Ghosts Can’t… Do It, and since then he has appeared in a total of 11 movies and 13 television episodes, in addition to his famous role as host on The Apprentice. Although his acting career has been overshadowed by his role in politics, his brief appearance in Celebrity has left a lasting impression on Allen.
This revealing conversation between Allen and Maher suggests that, despite the disparity between their political inclinations and creative desires, there is a clear recognition of Trump’s skill in front of the camera. However, as Allen himself stated, “that’s not going to happen,” which adds a layer of irony to the situation.
