In the second episode of the Noclip documentary series about MachineGames, a surprising aspect that was left out of the final version of Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus was revealed. The developers considered showing Adolf Hitler’s penis in a scene where the dictator urinates, but ultimately decided to omit it as they deemed it too extreme. This comment was made by the studio director, Jerk Gustafsson, who mentioned that such an idea was a step too bold even for their approach to dark humor.
Decisions were made regarding Hitler
In this memorable sequence, the protagonist BJ Blazkowicz infiltrates a Nazi base on Venus, auditioning for a role in a propaganda film. The scene unfolds tensely, reminiscent of the works of Quentin Tarantino, as Hitler, in a deteriorated mental state, strides through the room and threatens the actors who fail to impress him.
The co-founder of MachineGames, Jens Matthies, explained that the goal was to portray Hitler in an extremely physical and grotesque manner, highlighting his repugnant behavior. “The thought was: he is going to be extremely physical. He is eating, he has to urinate, he is vomiting at one point. He is a very physical entity,” Matthies said. However, a conversation with a Bethesda executive made them reconsider the inclusion of the most shocking scene.
Both developers agree that omitting this representation was the right decision, emphasizing the importance of finding an ethical balance within the creative process. Additionally, the study looks to the future, suggesting that the series could evolve into a third installment. Previous innovations, such as the choice of unusual settings, pave an intriguing path for the next chapter of Wolfenstein, leaving fans wondering where the narrative will lead in the future.
