MachineGames, the developer behind the acclaimed Wolfenstein series, has expressed its desire to create a direct sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, a game released in 2017 that has captured players’ attention for its compelling narrative and gameplay. According to the studio’s director, Jerk Gustafsson, there has been a plan since their early days at id Software to create a trilogy centered around the character BJ Blazkowicz. Gustafsson emphasized that “we have a story to tell” and that the development of a sequel has always been on their narrative horizon.
Wolfenstein 3 is on the mind of MachineGames
Despite this intention, Gustafsson pointed out that the path to a new installment will not be easy, considering the open conclusion of Wolfenstein 2 and the transition to Wolfenstein: Youngblood, released in 2019. This last game, which focused on the daughters of BJ Blazkowicz and jumped 20 years in the timeline, presents a significant narrative challenge for developers looking to continue the already established story. The possibility of a sequel addressing this narrative gap seems complicated, as it would involve delicate maneuvers between different timelines and character developments.
However, despite these difficulties, many in the gaming community remain hopeful that MachineGames can carry out this ambitious sequel. It is important to remember that the studio has just released additional content for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, suggesting that it could still be quite some time before fans see a new chapter of Wolfenstein. Therefore, although MachineGames has big plans for the continuation of the saga, the wait could be long.
