Bungo Stray Dogs, available on Crunchyroll, is a series that hasn’t been known for its speed. Originally premiered on April 7, 2016, its first two seasons aired that same year. However, we had to wait until April 12, 2019, for its third season, and the fourth season was released only recently, on January 4, 2023. Surprisingly, Bones, the studio behind the adaptation, is not going to make us wait the customary three or four years for a new season. Because the fifth season already has a release date and is practically right around the corner, keeping us on the edge of our seats.
The fifth season of Bungo Stray Dogs will premiere on Wednesday, July 12. Continuing the story exactly where the fourth season left off, concluded on March 31, they haven’t made us wait even four months before giving us the continuation of one of the most popular and intriguing anime series of the current time.
From what the teaser has hinted at, the conflict that has been unfolding until now will escalate to a global level. With Decay of Angels portraying the Armed Detective Agency as the global villains, things get complicated for our protagonists. If in the fourth season we saw all the characters disconnected from each other for the first time, the fifth season seems to bring them back together to face off against an adversary who has surpassed them in every possible aspect.
For those unfamiliar, Bungo Stray Dogs is a manga series written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa, which is adapted into an anime by the studio Bones. It follows the story of Atsushi Nakajima, a teenager who is expelled from his orphanage. Everything begins when he joins the Armed Detective Agency, a group of detectives with supernatural powers named after famous writers from both Japan and the West. They tackle highly dangerous cases that go beyond the capabilities of the police or the military.
The manga has been published since 2012 and currently has 23 volumes. With the fifth season of the anime already catching up to the manga, it is expected that after this season, we may have to wait several years before a sixth season. However, in the meantime, we can rejoice in the obvious: we will have two seasons in a single year featuring the best fictional detectives. This is something that hasn’t happened since the anime’s premiere in 2016. And for that, we celebrate.
