Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against James Williams, a moderator of a Nintendo Switch piracy page on Reddit, claiming $4.5 million in damages. According to the complaint, Williams, who operated under the pseudonym Archbox, was involved in the operation of several piracy sites, in addition to selling hardware hacks and offering modified consoles that included pirated games. The video game company stated that Williams ignored a cease and desist order, which triggered the legal action against him.
A commendable and questionable investigation
Nintendo’s investigation allowed them to trace Williams’ identity through personal details he shared online, as well as through a request to repair his Switch console. Williams stopped responding to Nintendo’s requests, which resulted in a default judgment against him, as he did not present his defense to the court before the established deadlines.
In 2024, as a result of the demand, Nintendo successfully shut down the Yuzu and Citra emulators, demonstrating the company’s strong determination to protect its intellectual property. In turn, Nintendo has embarked on a legal battle against the developer of the game Palworld, and it is expected that they may open new lawsuits related to other creations that are presumed to infringe their rights. Additionally, Nintendo has recently been granted a patent that could hinder the release of future games inspired by Pokémon.
Meanwhile, the company remains vigilant about the creation of content related to its franchises, as evidenced by its interest in possible legal action against OpenAI’s new Sora 2 platform, which features AI-generated videos of Mario and Pikachu without permission.
