If you didn’t see it in theaters, we have good news because Netflix has added Dune 2 to its catalog, one of the most successful science fiction movies of the past year, just after its successful box office run. With global earnings of $714 million, Dune 2 became the seventh highest-grossing film of 2024, notably surpassing its predecessor, which reached $410 million. Warner Bros.’ decision to make the sequel available on Netflix aims to increase its visibility as preparations for the filming of Dune 3 are underway, scheduled for this summer, with a release anticipated for December 2026, although it does not yet have a confirmed official date.

Dune 3 won’t take long. Let the rhythm not stop

This move is strategic, given that Dune 2 was released exclusively in theaters, unlike Dune, which was launched simultaneously on Max. The latter had affected the box office performance of the first installment. Now, with Dune 2 available on Netflix, it is expected to gain a new boost in audience and position itself among the most-watched titles on Netflix, where its recent arrival after completing its run on Movistar+ offers a new opportunity to shine.

The movie, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet, has been acclaimed for its narrative and visual effects, which may have also contributed to its greater success compared to the first part. Since its release, Dune 2 maintained high positions at the box office, although it was eventually overtaken by Del revés 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King in the following weeks. With the increase in revenue and massive reception, it seems a natural step for Warner to want to maintain the momentum of the franchise as the production of the highly anticipated third installment approaches.
