This movie is Sergio Leone's great hidden gem and you can watch it streaming right now

Considered one of the greatest western directors, Sergio Leone is known for iconic films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. However, his 1971 work, Duck, You Sucker!, is often relegated to the background compared to these classics, despite combining elements of adventure and politics in a unique and ambitious way. A film that goes unnoticed among his masterpieces, Duck, You Sucker! was a project that Leone initially did not want to direct. Regarded as one of the greatest western directors, Sergio Leone is known for iconic films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. However, his 1971 work, Duck, You Sucker!, is often overshadowed compared to these classics, despite uniquely and ambitiously combining elements of adventure and politics.

A movie that goes unnoticed among its masterpieces

“Duck, You Sucker!” was a project that Leone initially did not want to direct. When he accepted the proposal from his collaborator Sergio Donatti, he was thinking of having someone else take charge of the production. However, the tensions during the shoot, especially with actor Rod Steiger, forced Leone to take the helm of direction. Despite these conflicts, Steiger acknowledged Leone’s merit after the film’s premiere.

Visually, the film presents a less polished aesthetic approach compared to Leone’s other works. This choice may have contributed to its perception as the “worst western” of his career, although it contains moments of great visual strength. Unlike his previous works, in Duck, You Sucker! the dialogues are scarce, allowing Ennio Morricone’s powerful soundtrack to drive the narrative, which some critics consider an excessive use of this resource.

This evening, the movie will be broadcast on Trece starting at 10:00 PM, offering viewers the chance to rediscover a work that, although uneven, continues to be an important part of Leone’s legacy; and if you miss it, you can also watch it anytime on Amazon Prime Video and Filmin. The blend of spectacularity and dramatic lyricism, as well as the flashbacks centered on the character played by James Coburn, provide a nuance of melancholy that distinguishes this work from others in the same genre.

Cinema has showcased a plethora of villains throughout its history, leaving an indelible mark on collective memory, and among them stands out Sentenza, the character played by Lee Van Cleef in the classic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Released in Spain on August 7, 1968, this film directed by Sergio Leone eventually became a benchmark of the western genre, despite an initial critical reception that was not entirely favorable.

An absolutely despicable villain

Sentenza, also known as “the Bad,” is an unrelenting villain whose coldness and cruelty define much of his character. His relentless and meticulous search for a Confederate treasure makes him a memorable antagonist who faces Blondie, the “Good,” and Tuco, the “Ugly.” Van Cleef’s performance is noteworthy, not only for his piercing gaze and unmistakable “eagle nose,” but also for the construction of a character who lives without compassion or remorse.

Throughout his career, Van Cleef had to tackle complex personal issues, including a significant alcohol addiction. However, Leone’s vision allowed him to become a relevant actor, elevating his career and improving his personal life through stable partnerships that continued in Italy. The collaboration between the two was crucial, as it not only led him to obtain larger roles but, strategically, Leone involved his family to help manage his addictions during filming.

Over time, Sentenza has been relegated to the category of cultural icon. His legacy extends beyond the film itself, solidifying him as one of the most remembered and emblematic villains in the history of cinema. Through his unparalleled cruelty and meticulous character, Van Cleef left a mark that still resonates in the film industry and in the minds of fans.

Clint Eastwood, at 95 years old, continues to leave his mark on the film world with his latest work as director, Jury No. 2, scheduled to premiere at the end of 2024. For more than six decades, Eastwood has been considered the ultimate gunslinger and a pioneer among modern action stars. His rise to stardom began in the 60s with the iconic Dollar Trilogy directed by Sergio Leone, which includes unforgettable films such as A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

A movie that is hard to understand why it was rejected

Despite his success, Eastwood made difficult decisions that have marked his career. Shortly after his collaboration with Leone, the director offered him an important role in another western. However, the actor decided to turn down the offer, fearing being typecast in a single type of role. This refusal affected his relationship with Leone, which was only reconciled shortly before the director’s death in 1989.

Ironies of fate, the movie in which Eastwood chose not to participate, Once Upon a Time in the West, has established itself as one of the best in the western genre. According to SensaCine readers, it ranks sixth on their list of the best westerns of all time, with a rating of 4.2 out of 5. The story, which features a mysterious character known as Harmonica, was ultimately played by Charles Bronson, who also became an icon of the genre.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” a film that, although without Eastwood’s participation, has remained a classic. His legacy as an actor and director lives on, challenging the conventions of cinema and paving new paths for future generations of filmmakers.

In an unexpected turn in his career, Sergio Leone was convinced by Paramount Pictures to return to directing a western after his retirement from the genre, which had taken place after the success of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Although he was immersed in a personal dream, the adaptation of the novel The Cloaks, which would culminate in Once Upon a Time in America, the studio offered him an irresistible budget to create another masterpiece of the Wild West.

A movie that exists for the interests of the studio

Leone, known for his distinctive style and his demands in the production process, teamed up with renowned screenwriters Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento to bring to life Once Upon a Time in the West. Throughout the making of the film, the director faced a significant challenge: the choice of the lead actor for the iconic role of Harmonica. Although several well-known actors in Hollywood were considered, including Rock Hudson and Warren Beatty, Leone fought hard to choose Charles Bronson, an actor who, despite having starred in lower-profile films, had the character and physical presence that the director deemed perfect for the role.

According to the book Sergio Leone by Noël Simsolo, the director rejected the studio’s insistence on more well-known actors, stating that Beatty was in the wrong movie. Ultimately, his decision to cast Bronson not only resulted in one of the most memorable scenes in cinema but also catapulted the actor’s career to new levels of recognition, allowing him to take on leading roles in more significant productions like Under Any Flag and Violent City. Thus, Once Upon a Time in the West has not only established itself as one of the great pillars of the western genre but has also been recognized as one of the greatest films of all time, celebrated for its direction and Bronson’s performance. Which you can now watch streaming on Apple TV.
