Netflix has decided to cancel one of its most recent series, The Atomic Shelter, after the discouraging audience performance and the negative reviews it received since its premiere on September 19. With only 33% positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has been doomed, leaving fans without a conclusion, as the production did not meet the expectations of the audience or its creators, Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato.
There is no refuge that can save you
The cancellation has been confirmed by El País, which reports that Vancouver Media, the production company behind the series, has already begun dismantling the sets built for the production. These sets had been active until the release of the first part of the series, which ended on a cliffhanger that will no longer be resolved. This situation has generated discontent among fans who were hoping for a continued storyline.
The decision-making process by Netflix was notably deliberate, as the platform took almost three months to act. This wait may have been a strategy to align other positive news, given that on the same day as the cancellation announcement, Netflix also revealed the release date for the second season of Berlin. In the new season, Álvaro Morte will reprise his iconic role as the Professor, which could provide a respite for fans of Pina’s productions.
The cancellation of The Atomic Shelter highlights once again the challenges Netflix faces in trying to find new series that resonate with its audience. Although the platform had high hopes that the successor to Money Heist would capture viewers’ attention, the reality has proven to be very different.
