Asha Sharma has been appointed the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming following the unexpected retirement of Phil Spencer, which has raised some concerns among the gaming community.
Since joining Microsoft in 2024, Sharma served as president of CoreAI and her background includes significant roles at Instacart and Meta, but her experience in the gaming field is considered limited compared to that of her predecessor, who was known for his passion for video games since childhood.
A Controversial CEO
In this context, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has expressed his confidence in Sharma’s abilities. In a recent interview, Zelnick stated that he does not believe he needs to offer her advice as he considers her a highly capable executive.
“I’m going to bet that she will continue to do well,” he said, emphasizing that her focus should be on business success above the credentials of the gaming industry.
Zelnick, who has led Take-Two for nearly two decades, also shared his own experience when taking on his role, recalling that he was not a video game expert at that time, but came from the entertainment industry, with a background at Columbia Pictures and 20th Century Fox. His strategy has focused on creating successful titles, a philosophy that seems to be the foundation of his success at the company.
Despite the initial criticism of Sharma’s lack of experience in the sector, the ability to lead does not always come from having a history in gaming. According to Zelnick, successes in the industry are the result of good creative and business management. The recent dissolution of Take-Two’s Private Division label, which moved away from its “hit creators” strategy, highlights how producing successful games has become the top priority for major publishers in an increasingly competitive market.
