If there is a cult mangaka within the mainstream, it is Inio Asano. Known for his manga Goodnight Punpun and Solanin, his nihilistic view of the world and his unique drawing style have captivated many readers. This has also meant that his work has rarely been adapted into anime. Considered difficult to translate into moving images and without massive support behind him, anime studios have been reluctant to adapt his work. Until now.
Last March, an adaptation of his manga Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction premiered in Japan as a two-part film. Produced by Production +h, it is directed by Kurokawa Tomoyuki, famous for his work on Psycho-Pass, and written by Yoshida Reiko, the screenwriter of the absolutely wonderful Liz and the Blue Bird and A Silent Voice. And now, it is coming to television.
Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction is going to become an 18-episode television series. Using the content from the movies and new footage created especially for the occasion, the series will extend the events seen so far.
If you are not familiar with the original manga, Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction is about the daily life of two high school girls, Koyama Kadode and Nakagawa Ouran, who have a nihilistic and rather strange perspective of the world. Meanwhile, in the background, a large spaceship appeared over Tokyo three years before the start of the story. Unable to communicate with it or bring it down, the Japanese authorities and media constantly talk about the ship, while people go about their daily lives as if the ship wasn’t there. Including Kadode and Ouran.
The anime promises to be as unique as the manga, which you can also watch without having to wait long. The series will premiere its first episode on Crunchyroll next Thursday, May 23rd at 5pm. From then on, a new episode will premiere every Thursday, at the same time. Something interesting, because the second part of the Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction movie will premiere on May 24th in Japan. So, fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to be able to watch this promising series.
