The filmmaker Carl Rinsch, who was once considered a promising figure in Hollywood, is now facing serious financial and legal troubles after mismanaging the funds allocated by Netflix for his series project Conquest. This project, which had caught the attention of the streaming platform with an investment of $61.2 million, never came to fruition as filming was not completed due to the director’s personal and professional difficulties.
A director with a lot of nerve
Rinsch, known for his work on The Legend of the Samurai: 47 Ronin, has been charged with multiple counts, including wire fraud and money laundering, which could result in a sentence of up to 90 years in prison. It has been revealed that the director, whose career had been shattered after the poor reception of his only film, began to exhibit erratic behavior, exacerbated by addiction issues and a search for additional funding that ultimately cost Netflix even more.
After requesting an additional 11 million dollars, Rinsch used part of the funds for high-risk investments, including cryptocurrencies, which led to significant losses. As his financial situation deteriorated, so did his personal relationships. His wife, Gabriela Rosés, ultimately decided to divorce, and Netflix chose to take legal action due to the lack of progress on the project and the misuse of funds.
In a dramatic turn of events, Rinsch declared bankruptcy, which prevents him from even attending his scheduled trial this December. According to reports, his defenders have requested that travel and accommodation expenses be covered by the judicial system. With a trial that could summon high-profile figures like Ted Sarandos or Keanu Reeves, Rinsch’s future looks bleak, as his series Conquest remains a lost project in the limbo of Hollywood.
