A recent report from Circana has revealed that two-thirds of consumers who oppose the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in their devices do so because they believe their current devices work well without this technology. 59% of respondents expressed concerns about privacy, suggesting that distrust towards AI is not a minor issue. Additionally, 43% of those who reject AI do not see a justification for paying more for it, highlighting a mixed landscape in the acceptance of technological change.
It doesn’t seem that AI will prevail
Despite this resistance, the report highlights that 65% of respondents express interest in incorporating AI capabilities into at least one of their devices. This interest is notably higher among young people aged 18 to 24, reaching 82%, which aligns with the historical trend that new technologies are adopted more quickly by younger individuals. This situation poses a dilemma for developers, as they face the need to convince older consumers that the benefits of AI outweigh current concerns.
Concerns about the intrusiveness and environmental impact of AI are also present, especially among the more informed. With the rapid evolution of technology, the fear of surveillance by tech companies and the economic repercussions generates significant resistance in some demographic groups. However, the situation could easily change within a few years, as familiarity and comfort with AI increase.
