Alien, Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi horror classic, hits Netflix in the United States on September 1, 2026. So far, that’s the only release date that’s been confirmed. If you’re in the UK, Canada, or Australia, you’ll probably have to wait for a separate update. If you’ve never seen it, the setup is simple and nasty: the crew of the Nostromo answers a distress call, and what starts as a space mystery tightens into a trapped, airless fight to stay alive.
There’s a reason Alien still gets talked about as one of the great sci-fi horror movies. It has that old-school futuristic world-building, but it also knows how to drag out the tension. The dread builds slowly, then the shocks hit, the body horror lands, and the creature reveal still sticks with you.
Pretty much every piece of the movie locks into place. Ridley Scott’s direction, H.R. Giger’s design work, Sigourney Weaver’s breakout turn as Ellen Ripley, it all comes together. Audiences showed up for it too: the film made more than $100 million worldwide against an $11 million budget, and it also took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
The series hasn’t gone quiet, either. Alien: Romulus came out in 2024. Alien: Earth is in development at FX from Noah Hawley, with Ridley Scott on board as executive producer. Scott has also said he’s interested in telling another David story after Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
If you’re looking for one movie in September that feels like required viewing, make it Alien.
