By the end of 2025, it is estimated that more than 70 films have been produced based on the novels and stories of Stephen King, consolidating his impact on the film industry. Although the quality and variety of these adaptations can spark an endless debate about which is the best, on the IMDb platform, The Shawshank Redemption stands out, directed by Frank Darabont, which currently ranks as the highest-rated feature film in the history of this site.
Life imprisonment is an immeasurable movie
This film, featuring performances by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, tells the story of a banker unjustly convicted of murder and his quest for hope and friendship in the grim context of a high-security prison. What many may not know is that the success of The Shawshank Redemption would not have been possible without the Dollar Babies policy established by King nearly half a century ago, allowing young filmmakers to adapt his works for just one dollar, as long as they retained the film rights.
Frank Darabont, shortly after starting his career, obtained the rights to The Woman in the Room, which ultimately opened the door for him to adapt The Shawshank Redemption. Interestingly, Darabont wrote a check for $5,000 to acquire the rights to the work, which King never cashed. In a symbolic gesture of appreciation, the author framed the check and returned it to Darabont with a note that said: “In case you ever need bail money. With love, Steve.”
In addition to The Shawshank Redemption, the movie The Green Mile, also directed by Darabont and based on another work by King, is recommended for its high quality, although it is currently not available on streaming platforms. Nevertheless, both films remain significant examples of King’s legacy in cinema.
