Is this the beginning of the end for Fortnite?

Despite this general decline in interest in battle royales, Fortnite has managed to increase its share of playtime within the genre, raising it from 43% in 2021 to 77% in 2024. This growth has been driven by the successful Fortnite OG event in 2023 and the game’s expansion into non-battle royale derivatives, such as Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival. This suggests that Newzoo is accounting for the entire Fortnite audience in its share of the genre, not just those who play the battle royale modes.

Simultaneously, players have redirected their attention towards shooters and RPGs, especially in a year that promises to be significant for franchises like Call of Duty, which benefits from its inclusion in Game Pass. This shift in focus coincides with the release of notable titles such as Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals, as well as a prominent offering of action role-playing games.

Despite the specific decline in interest in battle royales, shooters in general have maintained a consistent representation of 40% in global playtime since 2021. This suggests that, although the battle royale may be losing its prominence, the appeal of shooters remains strong in the gaming community.

This decision, announced by CEO Niels Christiansen in an interview with Financial Times, aims to give the company greater control over its digital offerings, a notable shift compared to its recent history in the video game industry.

An investment they have been working on for years

For a long time, LEGO has relied on third-party video game development, as evidenced by its successful title LEGO Star Wars and the popular LEGO Indiana Jones series. However, in the 2000s, LEGO was forced to sell its video game division to avoid bankruptcy, a move that left the company in the hands of external studios. Now, with a record revenue of $10.1 billion in 2024 —a 13% increase from the previous year—, LEGO seems to be in a strong position to take back control of its digital development.

Since 2022, LEGO has invested hundreds of millions of dollars and has tripled its software engineering staff. This expansion is part of a broader effort to increase its presence in the digital realm, called “Project Darwin,” which initially focused on the digitization of its products. The company is now aiming to develop video games internally that can complement its physical and digital toy offerings.

Despite this move towards self-sufficiency, uncertainty remains about the future of its collaborations with external studios. The company will need to balance its new approach with the continuity of its successful franchises. Meanwhile, LEGO’s relevance in the world of video games remains evident, highlighted by the popularity of LEGO Fortnite, which has 87 million players. This change could mark the beginning of a new era for the Danish brand or simply be another component of its global strategy in the competitive digital market.

Now it will be possible to establish stables and silos, which will make accumulating resources such as eggs, wool or milk much easier and more direct. Especially because now we can keep all our animals in one place, previously tamed. Bringing the game experience closer to something more akin to a survival game.

And also, on May 4th, to celebrate the official Star Wars day, you will be able to get a new Chewbacca skin. On December 8th, Rocket Racing, an arcade-style racing game created by Psyonix, the makers of Rocket League, will be released. And on December 9th, Fortnite Festival will launch, a rhythm game from the creators of Rock Band that, to start, has been announced with the presence of Eminem.

Although we’ll have to wait until the end of the week to see everything included in this Chapter 5, it seems Epic has decided to expand their popular game more than ever and invite us to never leave its confines. Whether they achieve this with all these upcoming novelties remains to be seen.
