The speedrunner shredberg has managed to complete Super Meat Boy without dying, a remarkable milestone in the history of this iconic game of the masocore subgenre, after 15 years of failed attempts. Released in 2010, Super Meat Boy is known for its extreme level of difficulty and has challenged numerous players to try to overcome each of its demanding levels. However, until now, no one had managed to complete it in its entirety, achieving 106% of the available achievements, without suffering any deaths.
An achievement beyond the capabilities of most
Shredberg, who shared his achievement in a Reddit post, revealed that he estimated he spent between 700 and 800 hours perfecting a final run that lasted approximately two hours. Throughout his journey, he accumulated around 100,000 deaths as part of the arduous training process. Completing parts of the game without dying is not uncommon, as there are individual achievements for each world. However, achieving a full run of the work is an unprecedented feat.
The co-creator of Super Meat Boy, Edmund McMillen, was impressed by this achievement. Through Twitter, McMillen congratulated shredberg, highlighting his astonishment and admiration for a challenge that many believed was almost impossible. “Congratulations! You are amazing,” McMillen expressed, reflecting the gaming community’s recognition of this feat.
Despite the gamer culture that often delights in challenging the impossible, it is surprising that no one has managed to complete the game without dying in the last 15 years. This event marks a new chapter in the history of Super Meat Boy and sets a precedent for future challenges that speedrunners will seek to overcome.
