The Last of Us saga has established itself as one of the most significant franchises in the realm of video games, and its protagonist, Ellie, stands out as the only person immune to the infection that has devastated the post-apocalyptic world.
This premise has been the driving force behind Joel’s journey, carrying an emotional weight that is narrated throughout the two installments already available. However, recent comments from Neil Druckmann suggest that there may be plans to expand this narrative with the possibility of introducing other immune characters.
The hope we needed
According to Gabriel Betancourt, former lighting artist at Naughty Dog, Druckmann revealed in a conversation that several people are immune in the universe of the saga, hinting that there is a whole congregation of such people.
This vision could lead to a more sophisticated story, although some fear that the inclusion of more immune characters could lessen the gravity of the events of the first two games without absolving Joel of his actions.
However, there is still no official confirmation regarding the development of a third installment, as Naughty Dog is currently focused on other projects, including Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Nevertheless, the possibility of a new title in the franchise has kept speculation alive among fans, especially after the ending of The Last of Us: Part 2, which suggests the return of the Fireflies.
Druckmann’s cryptic messages have fueled hopes for a continuation of the main story, prompting speculation about how the introduction of a group of immune individuals could influence the development of future plots. If actions align with what Druckmann has hinted at, fans are likely to explore an even more complex and nuanced world in upcoming chapters of the saga.
