This weekend was AnimeJapan 2024 and we will tell you about the most important animes that were announced

This past weekend was AnimeJapan, one of the most important events in the industry, and we’ll tell you everything you need to know.

The AnimeJapan 2024 was held between March 23 and 24. This is one of the major events in the anime industry, where new animes are usually announced, information about some already announced ones is presented, and in general, we get a glimpse of what is to come in the industry. For that reason, it is important to pay attention to what happens there, and since it is impossible to cover everything, here we talk about the most important announcements that took place during this intense weekend.

Netflix DOWNLOAD

To start, Netflix had a lot to bring to the table, as the American company seems determined to become the epicenter of anime in the West. That’s why they have announced the latest season of BEASTARS, the popular series by author Paru Itagaki. Divided into two parts, fans have been waiting for the adaptation of this third and final season since its release outside of Japan in July 2021

Also from Netflix, but not from Paru, but from Keisuke, his father, comes a new anime of the most powerful fighters on Netflix and probably in the world. Because they announced that on June 6th, the Baki Hanma vs. Kengan Ashura crossover will premiere on the platform, a crossover of the two (more or less) realistic fighting animes most popular on the platform. Something that, from its trailer, promises to be an incredible festival of violence.

The latest big announcement from the platform was a project that we already knew about: Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance. A new Gundam production, this time not exactly anime, directed by Erasmus Brosdau and with animation by Sunrise and Safe House, entirely produced with Unreal Engine 5. While, visually, it seems quite different from what Gundam usually offers us, next autumn we will know the result of this peculiar western vision of one of the most Japanese series in history.

Outside of the US platform, the ads are not so short. One of the most anticipated is the announcement of The Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf, a new adaptation of Spice and Wolf, the novel series written by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Ju Ayakura. Divided into two parts, it will begin airing on April 1st on Japanese national television. And although it has not yet been confirmed for broadcast outside of Japan, it is expected that one of the major streaming services, such as Crunchyroll or Netflix, will embrace it.

Another series that is coming back, for which we have a date, but not when or how it will be released outside of Japan, is Pokémon. Because the new arc of Pokémon Horizons: The Series, which will include the Four Heavenly Kings of Paldea, will begin airing on April 12th. Considering that the series debuted worldwide on March 7th, we still have a long time to go before we see this season outside of Japan.

Crunchyroll, even if they didn’t have any big announcements to make during AnimeJapan, decided it was a good time to offer something that everyone was waiting for. A sneak peek at the second season of Tower of God, which recently announced its first video game. Although it only lasts a few seconds, the second season of the series will air next July, and perhaps this will be enough to ease the wait for its fans.

Another big announcement is the second season of Oshi no Ko. Adapting the arc from the Tokyo Blade theater play, it will delve into one of the most intense arcs of the manga, as shown in the first teaser they have released. Furthermore, it will premiere on April 12th, and although it has not yet been confirmed for platforms outside of Japan, it is expected to be available on one of the two major ones. Even with all the controversy that surrounded its first season.

Talking about past big hits, Bocchi the Rock! will be back much sooner than we expected. Although not in the way we wanted. Because two compilation movies of the series have been announced, which will be released respectively on June 7th and August 9th in Japan. While it is doubtful that we will get to see them outside the land of the rising sun, given the success the series achieved, we cannot rule out the possibility of them reaching us after all.

But probably the biggest announcement of the whole weekend was the confirmation of the return of the Monogatari franchise. Confirming that the Monogatari Series Off & Monster Season anime will begin with Orokamonogatari, showing a trailer and the return of key personnel from the original staff, it is announced for 2024, but without a specific date. This makes us look forward to this year’s anime, which seems to be loaded with great series to follow closely.

We watch the best Anime of the Year: you can’t stop watching it!

The best anime of the year is not afraid to talk about all the abuses that happen in the entertainment industry and all its adjacent places.

In fiction, it is very common to sugarcoat what is intended to be criticized. Sometimes, to avoid sensationalizing or creating excessive controversy, or to appear less exaggerated or unbelievable, the portrayal of certain things is softened more than what reality truly represents. Of course, this doesn’t happen all the time. There are works that dare to break taboos, explore subjects that are typically untouched, and do so without succumbing to the sensationalism that some may avoid but others actively seek. Such is the case with the best anime of the year so far: Oshi no Ko.

The synopsis of the anime, to be fair, is quite perplexing. The protagonist is Gorou Amamiya, a gynecologist and fan of a singer named Ai Hoshino, due to his relationship with a young woman in his hospital who suffers from a terminal illness and with whom he has a fraternal bond. One day, Hoshino appears in his clinic because she is pregnant with twins and asks him to secretly handle her pregnancy, as no one can know about it, or her career as an idol could be jeopardized. As a fan and a doctor, he accepts, forming a close relationship with Hoshino, only to be murdered on the day of the delivery.

The major twist in all of this is that Gorou is reincarnated as one of Ai’s children, Aqua Hoshino. Similarly, the terminally ill patient he befriended is also reincarnated as his twin sister, Ruby Hoshino, without his knowledge. In this way, both fans of Ai become her children and, when she is killed, they both come to the conclusion that they will enter the world of entertainment when they grow up to discover who was responsible for their mother’s murder and seek vengeance upon them.

Although it may seem riddled with spoilers, this synopsis literally covers the first chapter of the anime. Not even the first volume of the manga. The story actually begins with Ruby and Aqua as teenagers, entering the world of entertainment. First Aqua, becoming an actor, then Ruby, following in her mother’s footsteps, becoming an idol. Something that at all times is treated with a tone close to that of a horror play.

The anime’s portrayal of the world of show business is that of a stark, cruel world, and on many occasions, directly built on abuse. Although with touches of comedy here and there, everything in anime is built on this concept. The important thing is to fulfill one’s own purposes and using others is the norm in an industry that is not afraid to use sex, money, power and people as it pleases, regardless of their age, gender or circumstances. Something that the main characters themselves end up getting involved in to a great extent, especially the much less innocent, and much more pragmatic, Aqua.

In addition, in the anime, with respect to the manga, they have reinforced some of the murkier aspects. Creating more contrast between the dark of its themes and the light of its aesthetics, giving it a particular approach with the use of music created especially for the series, everything serves to give it an even more raw approach.

All of this has also led to the series being viewed from a more critical perspective than the manga. While the manga has sold tremendously well, it hasn’t generated any particular controversy, unlike the anime. The resemblance of a bullying subplot that culminates in an attempted suicide and its similarities to a real-life bullying case that ended in suicide have led to the series facing harsh criticism, which remains unanswered by the studio or the creators. This also tarnishes the overall impression, as it makes them appear less sensitive to the issues they critically address in their own anime.

Nevertheless, Oshi no Ko remains an excellent anime with interesting animation, superb designs, and an outstanding script. It is the kind of series that is worth watching and undoubtedly ranks among the best, if not the best, anime we have seen so far this year. Rarely do we come across stories that dare to address such controversial topics with such evident commitment, without falling into sensationalism or falling short in their treatment of these subjects. And for that, we celebrate it.

Record-Breaking Opening: This Anime’s Theme Song Shatters Playback Records

Oshi no Ko continues to break records with its opening song, Idol, reaching the top of the charts in Japan and the US.

Oshi no Ko continues its triumphant journey, this time reaching 200 million online views for its opening theme, “Idol” by YOASOBI, in just nine weeks. With the views exclusively from Japan, this sets a new record on Billboard Japan, making it the fastest song to reach 200 million views. But this is not the first record it has broken. It previously surpassed 100 million views in just five weeks and debuted at number 1 on the most listened songs chart on April 19th on Billboard Japan.

This success, in fact, is not limited to Japan alone. The English version of the song has also reached number 1 on the Billboard chart in the US, debuting at number 6, while the original Japanese version has reached the tenth position. This places “Idol” as the first song in history originally composed in Japanese to reach the top of the US charts.

“Oshi no Ko” is an anime that premiered on April 12th, based on the manga of the same name by Akasaka and Yokoyari. The manga can be read in Spanish on the free service MANGA Plus, and the anime can be watched on the streaming platform Crunchyroll. The premise of the series is that a gynecologist is murdered and reincarnated as the son of his favorite idol, only to discover that the world of music is neither beautiful nor glamorous.

While facing some controversial issues along the way, “Oshi no Ko” is proving to be an absolute success both in Japan and internationally. This is evident in its numbers and the popularity of its opening, achieving something that no other anime had achieved before: reaching the top of the most listened songs in the United States. With the conclusion of the first season yet to be seen, it seems that “Oshi no Ko” is here to stay.
