In the worst moment in the history of ‘Silent Hill’, Konami announces its news trying to save the saga

Oh, 25 years have passed since that first game, and in the end, something died. Specifically, the popularity of the Konami saga… at least, until now.

I remember perfectly the first time I played ‘Silent Hill‘ on my cousin’s pirated PlayStation. There was something about that atmosphere and those polygons that made it special, unique, a horror game that was not only about jumpscares and killing, but about unraveling the mystery around the town. It has been -oh- 25 years since that first game, and in the end something died. Specifically, the popularity of the Konami saga… at least, until now.

Don’t look for me anymore, I don’t live there anymore

After the coitus interruptus that was ‘P.T.’, that demo from ten years ago that promised the definitive game of the franchise with a collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, we did not venture into Silent Hill again. ‘Downpour’ was a critical and commercial failure that indicated that it was over and waiting for a resurrection. Well, it seems that it has arrived. Let’s cross our fingers.

The truth is that last year, ‘Silent Hill’ tried to do something innovative with the release of its interactive series, ‘Ascension’, but it was a terrible concept mistake that only led to sadness from its followers. At least there were the promises of the remake of the second part and other titles of which we only had the title, like ‘F’ or ‘Townfall’.

However, we have seen the light at the end of the tunnel: Konami has announced that this Thursday 30th at four in the afternoon (one in the morning in Spain) we will have a Silent Hill Transmission with news about upcoming games, the movie, and in general, the state of the franchise, including merchandising. The developers of the different ongoing games have urged us to watch it, so it seems that, finally, we will have surprises about a dying saga that has its golden opportunity to shine again… if it can do so through the fog.

Months after its release, what has happened to ‘Silent Hill: Ascension’?

Since the first episode of ‘Ascension’ was released, Konami has found itself entangled in something much worse than fan hatred: absolute indifference.

It was launched as the next vital chapter of the ‘Silent Hill’ saga, but since the first episode of ‘Ascension’ came out, Konami has been involved in something much worse than fan hatred: absolute indifference. The web series in which we can make decisions that change the course of the game has not regained the popularity it had at its launch, back on October 31st of last year… And many believe that it has quietly died.

Silence, hills

Everything points to the fact that the number of views (or games, as you want to call them) of this project has gone in the opposite direction of “ascension”. And, in fact, after episode 8, which was released on December 21st, the developers asked Konami to slow down and release the new episodes more calmly in order to have weekends off. The classic “If no one cares, at least leave us alone”.

And although initially the game was supposed to last six months (each quarter a “game” with different decisions), it is most likely going to be extended to ten so that the creatives can sleep peacefully. But it will not be removed from the Internet even if there are only 5000 people interested around the world for a simple reason: it is already done, and it only needs to be implemented according to the users’ decisions. It will go down in history as one of the most cursed projects in the franchise. And with Kojima’s Silent Hills out there, frankly, it’s commendable.

What’s happening with the new Silent Hills for consoles? It’s been a year without any news about them

We’ve been knowing exactly the same thing for a year. They are supposedly still growing the studio to bring this game to light, so the recommendation is that we sit and wait

In October of last year, fans of ‘Silent Hill’ were given their first big joy in years: the saga was going to make a comeback in a big way, with the remake of the second part, an interactive game called ‘Ascension,’ and two spin-offs: ‘Townfall’ and ‘F’. Since then until today, they have only fulfilled one of the promises: ‘Ascension,’ which has caused public outrage. What has happened with the rest? Will we ever see this promised resurrection?

Return to Silent Hill

At least we can say there’s some good news amid the radio silence: Konami has hired more team members for the new ‘Silent Hill,’ or at least, they’re in the process of doing so. On their job portal, they’re looking for artists, planners, engineers, and project managers, showing a determined commitment to the franchise. There are more confirmed remakes in the pipeline… but apart from that, little else is known about it lately.

It’s a shame because ‘Silent Hill Townfall’ has everything to be a success. No Code in development, Annapurna in publishing, a game filled with small independent stories that… Well… that’s about it. For a year now, we’ve known exactly the same information. Supposedly, they’re still expanding the studio to bring this game to light, so the recommendation is to wait patiently. It’s not very different from the situation with ‘Silent Hill F.’

We know it’ll be a new installment in the main series, which has been dormant for eleven years. However, for now, all we have is a question posed by the game director, Alan Yang, on Twitter asking followers what they thought the “F” stood for in a work-related bet. Other than that, no details have been revealed, so the only thing we know for sure is that Konami still believes in the game. It hasn’t been canceled. Yet.

As for ‘The Short Message,’ we have a bit more information. It’s been hinted that the game will tackle subjects like suicide, leading to it being rated for adults only (18+) in Australia. However, the game remains in limbo because Konami hasn’t even officially announced it yet.

The one that has been announced, and with a big fanfare, is ‘Silent Hill 2‘, slated to land on our consoles in 2024, without a specific date yet. The fact that the studio believes in this franchise again doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll give us bait to reel us in. There’s still a long way to go before we can feel scared again. Even ‘Return to Silent Hill,’ the movie accompanying this relaunch, has indefinitely postponed its release. We’ll see how it all turns out, but they’re taking their time.

You might not be aware, but there’s a new ‘Silent Hill’… And the fans already hate it

Each day there will be a new episode based on the decisions made by the live audience the previous day, who will be able to vote for 24 hours.

One of the biggest mysteries in the history of video games is understanding why Konami rejected Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Silent Hill’ game and, instead, chose to usher in a decade without any games in the franchise. Especially when, for the first time in a long while, ‘P.T’ was being praised and reviving the sense of horror from the early games in the series. Instead, ten years of waiting have led to ‘Silent Hill: Ascension.’ And that’s not a good thing.

Silent Hill: Ascension DOWNLOAD

Don’t look for me anymore, I don’t live there anymore.

After ten years without returning to Silent Hill, Konami has decided that its triumphant comeback will be… a video game in the style of ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ where the player will have to make choices that will affect the rest of the storyline. Well, actually, it’s much more complex: each day there will be a new episode based on the decisions made by the live audience the day before, which can vote for 24 hours.

But this won’t be a democratic vote; those with more “influence points” (in other words, those who perform better in some rather ridiculous mini-games) will have more say in deciding who lives and who dies. All through the Ascension app or their website. Playing a game and feeling like it’s homework: well done, Konami.

The creators’ idea is for you to drop everything you’re doing to watch the live show because it’s free, and you should take advantage of it. Or you can pay twenty dollars per season and get rewards and more influence points. Oh. They say that more than a million people pre-registered, and the viewership level is much higher than expected. But, of course, the season has just started. The interesting part will be what happens when it ends.

Another problem? The chat was filled with sexual references (specifically, to ejaculation) and they had to take it down immediately. It’s as if they don’t know how the Internet reacts when it’s frustrated. At the moment, those who have tried it either say it’s a scam, or believe it will be the most hated ‘Silent Hill’ experience ever. In any case, it doesn’t look good… especially when this was supposed to be the first step in the resurrection of the franchise. Something tells me that, for now, it’s going to stay buried.

Immerse Yourself in the Nightmarish World of Silent Hill: New Interactive Series Trailer Released

Silent Hill: Ascension has a new trailer to show us what it looks like, what its main themes are, and to leave us with more unknowns than answers.

Silent Hill is a cult series that, after languishing in Konami’s basement for years, has come back to life. And while it’s true that the remake of Silent Hill 2 being developed by Bloober Team has taken all the spotlight, that doesn’t mean it’s the only title in the works. Among others, the interactive series Silent Hill: Ascension is also being developed, and now we have a new trailer for it.

The appeal of this interactive series lies in the power to decide the outcome of each character. In this regard, the team behind the title, Genvid, has stated, “In Silent Hill: Ascension, the actions of millions of people will determine the outcome. By the time the final scene airs, which characters will have survived? Of those who remain, who will be redeemed, who will be condemned, and who will suffer? Even the creators of the project don’t know how Silent Hill: Ascension will end. The fate of its characters is in the hands of the audience.”

After this, all the previously unanswered questions still remain. What is its release date, what is its connection to the rest of the Silent Hill franchise, and particularly, whether this is even a video game. But while they solve all our doubts, we can continue to enjoy this captivating new trailer.

Konami starts pulling Silent Hill licenses to protect the intellectual property

About two to three weeks ago, I had the unpleasant experience of having Konami withdraw the permission I had received in 2012 to write my own Silent Hill novels. Since I’d published one and was mid-way through the second, it came as quite a blow. However, the experience showed me just how much the publisher wants to protect its intellectual property going forward.

Here’s what happened, why Konami pulled the Silent Hill license, and what’s to come in the future.

What happened to my Silent Hill novels?

I wrote a detailed article on my book publishing website about Konami removing the permission for my Silent Hill novels. While I don’t want to rewrite all those details, there are some chief points I want to highlight as an overview:

  • The Konami team incorrectly redirected me in 2012 to a local license distributor for the license, who gave me permission to write the Silent Hill novels, even though they didn’t have the authority to do so
  • I published my first Silent Hill: Betrayal novel in 2016, which was released worldwide, with a brand new story, character, and locations
  • I almost completed the second novel, Silent Hill: Obversion, two months ago
  • Konami UK approached me in November 2022, asking for evidence of the license, stating that they want to protect the intellectual property now that new products are being developed
  • After considering the evidence of communication I sent through, Konami Japan advised that the correct process wasn’t followed and retracted the so-called ‘permission’
  • I applied for a new license for ten years for all seven books in the Boatman Saga
  • Konami declined the application, stating that my story isn’t in line with its future plans for the franchise, but they’ll contact me if that ever changes

Protecting the intellectual property: why now suddenly?

What strikes me and so many of my followers as strange is that Konami now suddenly wants to protect its intellectual property. After I’d already published the first book and sold over a thousand copies, it now wants to deal with Silent Hill differently.

It left me wondering if they’re doing the same for other Silent Hill products and books. There are many fan-made comics and novels online for the I.P. Are they being fair, approaching them too and asking for proof of license approval?

One comment by Konami struck me as interesting. There was a hint that if a bigger name was behind the novel or publication, they might reconsider. This leaves me to believe that perhaps it’s more about how much money they can make from my novels rather than protecting the I.P. Of course, this is all conjecture, and we’ll have to go with defending the intellectual property of Silent Hill as the official response.

We’ve almost seen the same behavior with Dungeons and Dragons recently. Wizards of the Coast are revising the rules of the open license agreement. They initially drafted a statement whereby they could take royalties for the use of the property. As you’ll see in one of my recent articles, the community struck back and that section was removed.

Perhaps I should rally the Silent Hill community to do the same for me…

If only I didn’t like and respect Konami as much as I do.

There could have been a Silent Hill multiverse

Let’s go back to the comment by Konami that my stories aren’t in line with future plans for the series. I honestly am still struggling to see why this is an issue. Most of the stories have plots of their own. Silent Hill 1, 3, and Origins deal with Alessa, while Silent Hill 2 and 4 are only connected by Walter Sullivan, and it’s thin at best. Downpour and Homecoming were completely different stories, and Silent Hill F seems to have nothing to do with any of these.

That’s why I don’t really believe my Boatman Saga should be an issue. Silent Hill provides a different experience for anyone that enters. The least Konami could have done was be honest with me about why they don’t want to approve the license. I’m afraid I can’t buy this ‘reason’ they provided.

In a sense, all these stories could have led to a cool crossover, much like Marvel and DC’s multiverse notion. Imagine a game where they all appear, as do the different versions of Pyramid Head.

What will happen to my horror novels now?

While Konami continues with its plans for new Silent Hill games and movies, I need to continue with my novels. The game publisher did say that perhaps it will change its mind in the future, but I have no idea how long that will be, if ever. I have thousands of readers wanting to know what will happen in the second book. Holding on is not a viable option for me.

For now, I’m taking a small break from the horror series. On my author site, I’ve detailed all the novel projects I’m busy with, which are extensive.

As for the Boatman Saga, I’m simply going to change the town’s name and all references to Silent Hill. My followers and I toyed with names like “Quiet Valley” or “Tormented Town”, but none of them resonate with me. I think I’ve narrowed down the name I want to go with that speaks to the essence of the haunted location, but I’ll make that announcement sometime in the future.

The story will go on…

Will I still be involved in Silent Hill projects?

In the last communication with Konami UK, it felt like they were still providing me with the hope that I can work on Silent Hill projects in the future. It was nothing cast in stone, though. I did say that, although I’m renaming my horror series, Konami are welcome to contact me at any time if they’d like me to write any books or content for games/movies in the future.

I’m not holding my breath, but that would be fantastic.
