State of Decay 3, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular zombie survival video game series, has been in development since 2020, but has faced a prolonged period of information silence. Since its announcement in July 2020 during an Xbox event to promote the Xbox Series X|S, the title has not returned to the company’s headlines, raising concerns among fans about its current status.
Will we see it in 2026?
Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Games Studio, has recently shared encouraging information about Undead Labs’ progress in developing the game. In statements to GamesRadar, Duncan assured that the game is progressing really well, and dismissed rumors that the title was stuck in what is known as development hell. This indicates that the team is not facing significant issues, and development is actively moving forward, with frequent reviews at the studio. I have visited the studio several times in the last six to eight months and have sat down to play with the team on many occasions, Duncan added, emphasizing his commitment to the project.
Although no specific release date has been indicated, some sources suggest that State of Decay 3 could be one of the standout titles that will complete Xbox’s release calendar for the year 2026. However, Duncan avoided committing to specific dates. Despite the lack of recent information and the silence at Xbox events, player anticipation persists, focusing on the potential of an open-world game that follows the line of previous entries in the franchise.
With State of Decay being one of Xbox’s most unique properties, many are eagerly awaiting the return of the game, which promises to continue the online title model to last many years in the market.
