After almost three years of waiting, The Handmaid’s Tale returns with the airing of its sixth and final season, available on Max. The return of the series marks a significant moment for both fans of the dystopia and its protagonist, Elisabeth Moss, who has portrayed June for nearly a decade. In recent statements, Moss expressed her difficulty in saying goodbye to a character that has occupied an important part of her professional life. There have been few moments in my life over the last 9 years when I haven’t been working on this series, she commented during the presentation of the new season in Los Angeles.

Goodbye to The Handmaid’s Tale, but its universe will continue

The series, which since its inception has resonated with a strong social impact, has been used as a symbol of resistance and protest in various situations. This legacy is something that Moss feels very proud of. It is undeniable that since its beginnings it has been relevant in the social discourse, transcending the screen, the actress stated, which underscores the deep connection between the series and contemporary movements for social justice.

As June’s story comes to an end, there is a possibility that Moss will appear in a future spin-off titled The Testaments, although there is no confirmation about it yet. While her role in the novel that inspires this spin-off is minor, it has been speculated that she could have a special appearance, which would keep the actress’s connection to the series that catapulted her to fame alive.

With the arrival of this new batch of episodes, fans are preparing for an emotional farewell, not only for the character of June but also for a story that has left an indelible mark on the world of television and popular culture.

Handmaid's Tale Season 3

Perhaps one of the best reasons to subscribe to Hulu, “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a spooky near-future imagining of what might happen if the world were suddenly faced with the one-two punch of a global fertility crisis and a rise in religious fundamentalism. It can be tough to watch, but it’s increasingly relevant in today’s political climate.

Spoilers for Season 2 below!

Season 2 ended with Serena Waterford reading from the Bible in front of Gilead’s leaders and getting her finger cut off for it. Emily shoved Aunt Lydia down the stairs. Nick’s assigned wife Eden was executed for running off with another man. With Serena’s blessing, June/Offred ran off with her daughter, handing her off to an escaping Emily, then turning back to Gilead.
