7 quick steps to straighten a photo in Photoshop

1. Import your photo in Photoshop: File > Open > select your image

For the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll use a screenshot from “Battlefield Earth” because that entire movie was shot at a Dutch angle for some reason.

Battlefield Earth

2. Left-click the Eyedropper Tool on the left side and select the Ruler Tool

Click eyedropper

Ruler tool3. With the Ruler Tool selected, you’ll simply make two clicks. See if you can find a horizontal straight line in your image. Maybe it’s a windowsill or a door frame. Anything that is level in real life will work.

It can also work with a vertical straight line – the side of a building or a flag pole can come in handy here. We’re going to draw a line along anything straight.

Click on one point of the line that should be horizontal, then click on another point in the image that should be horizontal, like this:

Using the Photoshop Ruler toolAfter your second click, a temporary line is left behind. That’s what Photoshop will use to straighten the image.

4. Go to Image > Image Rotation > Arbitrary

Arbitrary

When you click it, it does the math to rotate your image perfectly.

Rotate canvasClick OK.

5. Boom! Your image has been rotated. Photoshop expanded the canvas to fit the whole image. Because we made our line along that metal rail in the back, it is now level.

Rotated image6. Obviously, we don’t need all that extra image, so let’s crop it down. Select the Crop Tool, then click and drag a box around just the image you want to keep.

Crop tool7. Press Enter and all the distracting stuff goes away.

Look at this beautiful final result of Barry Pepper running away from what could have been a bright future in Hollywood!

Rotated final image

If you’re stuck without a horizontal or vertical line to get your photo straight, you can always free rotate that bad boy until your crooked image looks right. In that case, select your entire canvas, then go to Edit > Transform > Rotate. You’ll be eyeballing it, but at least you can come close!

Secret review groups may skew online eCommerce ratings

You may think twice about trusting online reviews after reading this.

Online reviews

It’s no secret that online reviews play a huge role in what products we purchase. Virtually every eCommerce site allows users to leave reviews. In order to save time and aggravation, we often sort by “most recommended.” But that’s a loophole some manufacturers are looking to exploit.

In some cases, fake reviews flood these sites. It’s hard to know whether you’re dealing with an actual human’s review or something generated by a bot or an army of spam reviewers. In other cases, real people might be compensated to leave a positive review. But there’s a very grey area that doesn’t get a lot of publicity…

Does free stuff influence online reviews?

Some online retailers offer a program where companies can give their products to “trusted reviewers” for free. The reviewers get to keep the product in exchange for sharing their opinion of it. But it’s fair to wonder if the “free stuff” has an impact on those reviewers.

For Amazon, the program is called Vine. For Home Depot, it’s Seeds. For Lowe’s, it’s called Loop (and there’s no link on their website to provide details).

Let’s say you’re a grill manufacturer, hoping to get a slew of 5-star reviews on a page as soon as your new model of grill hits store shelves. To accomplish this, you might hook up with one of those retailers to identify the “good” reviewers on the site. You’ll send them a free, brand-new grill before it’s available to the general public. The reviewer tries the grill, enjoys it, and gets to keep it, so they write up a favorable review. When the grill goes on sale to everyone else, it already has a head start with a handful of positive reviews.

Of course, it makes sense that any manufacturer would want positive reviews. And it helps if those reviews come from real people. But the clear ethical dilemma is that these reviewers don’t have to pay for the item they’re testing. To put it another way, you’re likely to be happy with virtually any free pizza, but if you have to plunk down $20, your standards are probably going to be higher.

We understand the impulse to get the quick and fast recommendation from your fellow users, but if you’re weighing a major purchase, it’s worthwhile to take your cues from a site like The Wirecutter, Consumer Reports, or Mr. Dad Reviews. In each case, you have real people testing products and giving unbiased feedback. Those publications pay for each of the products they test, so they won’t be influenced by any under-the-table money.

As always, it’s best to maintain a healthy skepticism with any review, but once you know some reviewers are getting free stuff for their participation, it’s one more reason for mistrust.

Netflix shares jaw-dropping new ‘Dark Crystal’ trailer

A Jim Henson cult classic gets new life with a dazzling Netflix series.

Dark Crystal Gelflings

Out: Hobbits

In: Gelflings

Fantasy fans have had a rough run lately. The original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy was an incredible achievement. The “Hobbit” trilogy was a bloated mess. “Game of Thrones” seemed to offer the magic and imagination those fans crave, but the final few seasons fumbled badly. Could Netflix ride to the rescue?

Today, the streaming giant shared a full trailer for their upcoming series, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” Take a look.

The video description also adds a bit more information than we’ve previously had…

“Light the fires of resistance! Join Deet, Rian and Brea on an epic quest to find hope in darkness, save Thra, and reveal their destiny. Nothing will ever be the same.”

The most impressive thing about these early scenes is the visual feel. Head to the movies today and you’re likely to see CGI superheroes or CGI remakes of animated Disney movies. This new “Dark Crystal” series features practical puppets mixed with apparently judicious CGI. The result is tactile and refreshing. Sure, the creatures still look stiff, but they’re actually there.

The biggest “wow” in the trailer is this crazy shot:

Dark Crystal jumpClearly, that’s all CGI, but it looks fantastic.

The 10-episode series also has a stellar lineup of voice talent: Taron Egerton, Nathalie Emmanuel, Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Natalie Dormer, Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs, Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, Keegan-Michael Key, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander.

You’ll be able to watch “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” on Netflix beginning August 30.

Surprise: Facebook let advertisers have your phone number

Advertisers probably have your phone number now. Thanks, Facebook!

Facebook

Did you trust Facebook with your phone number? That might not have been the smartest move.

The Federal Trade Commission is about to file a complaint that suggests Facebook misled its users about how their phone numbers would be handled.

You may have uploaded your phone number as part of two-factor authentication. But the FTC says advertisers used those numbers to target you without your knowledge.

The feds are also attacking Facebook for not clearly explaining that users could turn off a facial recognition tool often used for tagging photos. Allegedly, 30 million users were left in the dark about that setting.

This news comes as the government ripped Facebook with a $5 billion fine, although reports say the original fine was supposed to be much higher.

So will Facebook ever learn or are we doomed to report these constant data leaks every single day?

According to the Washington Post, Facebook is agreeing to “submit to unprecedented federal oversight of its business practices, including the creation of a special committee on its board of directors that regularly certifies the tech giant is handling user data appropriately.”

Somehow, we think this isn’t the end of Facebook’s privacy scandals…

Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ breaks 1 billion views on YouTube

The epic music video just reached an immortal number!

Bohemian Rhapsody milestone

Mama! Ooooooooo!

It’s been 44 years since Queen released “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but the song just notched an incredible milestone. Today, YouTube announced that the epic video has become the first pre-1990s music video to cross 1 billion views on the platform.

In case you need a refresher, turn up your speakers and let this rip:

The video was even remastered to mark the milestone.

Queen was ahead of its time. Remember that MTV didn’t launch until 1981, so this is considered the first promotional music video of its kind. The video certainly got a boost after the release of the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” biopic that featured the rise of the band before Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991.

1 billion views is an incredible milestone, but the landscape has changed pretty dramatically. “Gangnam Style” has 3.3 billion views in just seven years on YouTube! Now we anxiously await the musical movie about Psy’s life…

‘Cats’ trailer proves some things should not be filmed

Here’s the creepiest thing you’ll see today. Maybe ever.

Cat eating

Andrew Lloyd Webber is not for everyone. While capable of the occasional earworm, his musicals are usually long slogs punctuated by one or two moments of enjoyment.

If that’s your cup of tea, you’re probably overjoyed for the upcoming live-action “Cats” movie. The trailer was released today:

The entire thing looks like a badly digitally animated video game cutscene run through some sort of face-swap app. The all-star cast features people who will probably regret this very soon.

Here’s Dame Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy, hoping this will somehow top “The Chronicles of Riddick” as the weirdest film in her resume:

Judi Dench

Sir Ian McKellen must need a lake house, so he signed on for the paycheck as Gus The Theatre Cat:

Idris Elba is here as Macavity, which should negate any goodwill he built up as Stringer Bell:

Jennifer Hudson once scream-sung her way to an Oscar, so maybe she can snag another as Grizabella:

Jason Derulo looks to kill his acting career before it’s begun as Rum Tum Tugger:

Taylor Swift CatsLet’s throw in Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots:

Rebel WilsonAnd in case this trailer didn’t grate on your nerves enough, we’ll cap it off with James Corden as Bustopher Jones:

Bustopher JonesThe film was directed by Tom Hooper, who took the reins of the very hit-or-miss 2012 version of “Les Misérables” with Hugh Jackman (good!), Russell Crowe (bad!), Anne Hathaway (Oscar-winning!), and Amanda Seyfried (should never sing again).

Maybe we’re wrong and this thing will be a monster success. But right now, it looks like PornHub had a baby with a furry convention. Every actor looks like a fuzzy version of a Brundlefly.

Early YouTube reaction harkens back to the disaster of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” trailer:

The movie looks awful, but the memes will be glorious.

How to play Aquapark io

Home screen

One thing you’ll notice quickly is that ads are everywhere on this game. Look, there’s even one on the home screen! Oh, well. That’s the price you pay for a free game. You can get rid of the ads for $2.99. Also, if you throw your phone into airplane mode and disconnect Wi-Fi, the ads disappear!

aquapark.io home screen

On the home screen, you can click that little human icon on the right to change your appearance. When you start, you’re limited to choosing a boy or girl, but as you continue playing, you’ll get coins to unlock more fun skins.

aquapark.io skinsYou can click the gear icon to change some settings. When the game starts, your phone will vibrate every time you bump into another player or a barrier. That’s annoying, so we recommend turning that off.

The map icon lets you see different water park locations you might have unlocked. The basic game mechanics never change, but the appearance will.

Start playing!

aquapark.io

You’ll get a countdown and then you’re slipping and sliding in a race to the finish. As you move your finger left or right, your character will follow. Your job is to outrace the competition. The better your finish, the more coins you unlock (so you can get those sweet, sweet animal skins).

As you slide alongside other players during the race, use your body as a battering ram to send them flying off the side. Get even with them, then swipe left or right to bump other players off the course. But don’t swipe too hard or you’ll send yourself to your doom.

As you advance in the game, you’ll see barriers start to appear on the water slide. Smashing into a barrier or into the back of another player will slow you down. Try to avoid that at all costs.

You’ll also see yellow boost arrows. If you move your character over those, you’ll get a massive speed boost!

If you’re in the lead, your character will wear a little crown on their head. But don’t get complacent! Those other characters are going to keep racing after you.

Pros and cons

This colorful and sunny water slide game is mindless fun. It doesn’t take long to play a game, and you’ll get a little thrill every time you bump someone off the slide.

The ads are really annoying. After each round, you’ll be forced to sit through a little video designed to get you to download another app. Hint: The way to exit out of this screen is always on the upper right corner, so don’t be fooled by fake Xs in other parts of the screen.

That said, if you’re willing to put up with the ads or pay $2.99 to get rid of them, Aquapark.io is a fun way to unwind. Give it a shot!
