Analyst Rachel Wolff noted in a recent episode of Behind the Numbers that people are literally waiting until the last moment to make those decisions, thus reflecting the widespread economic concern among potential tourists.

Domestic travel increases

This change in the mindset of travelers translates into a search for greater value, leading to an increase in domestic travel and road trips, instead of opting for international flights. Additionally, stays are noticeably shorter, and there has been a growing interest in cruises. Quality experiences seem to be the priority, even for lower-income households, which are now a significant segment within the demand for cruises.

However, the outlook is not entirely positive. The initial projections for 2025 anticipated a 7% increase in air travel, but they have recently been revised to a 5% decline in incoming visits to the U.S. This may be a consequence of a notable decrease in the percentage of travelers from households with incomes below $50,000, which has dropped from 31% to 18% in just two years, while airlines are focusing more on higher-income passengers.

The industry could face a loss of up to 12.5 billion dollars in international tourist spending this year, mainly due to boycotts related to anti-American sentiment, which could severely impact the hospitality sector in the country. With uncertainty prevailing, the future of global tourism seems to be in a critical state.
