Fallout 5 has been officially approved and its development is already underway, although it has not been confirmed which studio will be in charge of the project. This news was revealed in a recent episode of the Xbox Two podcast, where Jez Corden, executive editor of Windows Central, shared that decisions about the Fallout franchise are being handled by Xbox, although he does not know who will lead the creation of the new installment.
The sheep that enter through those that exit
Interestingly, ZeniMax Online has made the decision to cancel its upcoming MMO, known as Project Blackbird, to reallocate resources to the development of Fallout 5. This project had been in pre-production since 2018, but with the aim of prioritizing a franchise that already has significant recognition, the decision was made to redirect investment towards Fallout, which represents a safer bet in the current market.
The cancellation of Project Blackbird was part of cuts made by Microsoft, and Corden explained that, given the high investments required to create a competitive MMO, the choice to invest in Fallout could be more beneficial compared to entering a sector already dominated by titles like World of Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls Online.
The interest in Fallout has significantly resurged, driven by the release of the Amazon television series in 2024, which could positively influence the reception of future games in the franchise. However, although Fallout 5 has been officially approved, its release is expected to take several years, as Bethesda Game Studios is currently focused on The Elder Scrolls VI and additional content for Starfield.
Additionally, work is being done on a remaster of Fallout 3 that could be released before the new installment, allowing fans to enjoy this classic title again while waiting for more news about Fallout 5.
