The long-awaited Tesla Roadster, first unveiled in 2017, appears to be fading from the automotive spotlight after years of repeated delays.
Originally slated to begin production in 2020, the launch has been pushed back each year, raising concerns about whether this much-hyped vehicle will ever make it to market.
The Roadster was promised to feature an impressive range of 620 miles (approximately 1,000 km) and an astonishing acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds.
Tesla Roadster Delays Raise Skepticism Over Its Future
Enthusiasm surrounding the Roadster has dwindled, morphing into skepticism as Tesla leadership remains largely quiet on the vehicle. Despite CEO Elon Musk’s previous assurances that “most of the engineering” was completed, there has been no substantial follow-up regarding production timelines.
The last official remarks indicated a vague expectation for 2025, leaving many to question the feasibility of such a launch.
Adding to the frustration, Tesla had promised to deliver dozens of Roadsters for free to customers who participated in their referral program—which has yet to materialize. With deposits ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 made by eager customers over five years ago, the stakes are high.
Promises of free vehicles and substantial discounts on others now feel unfulfilled, with Tesla potentially owing around 80 free Roadsters to referring customers.
Recent updates from Tesla, which indicated a shift from “in development” to “design development,” offer mixed signals. It’s not clear if this represents real progress or merely a rephrasing of internal statuses.
Industry observers are left wondering if the Roadster will be yet another missed opportunity, joining other delayed products like the Cybertruck. Given Tesla’s recent track record of launching a single new vehicle in the past five years, some experts speculate that the Roadster may never see the light of day.
