Tesla has hinted at the potential return of the much-discussed seven-seater option for the Model Y, a feature that had been eliminated due to lackluster interest in key markets such as the United States and China.

Originally launched in 2019, the third-row option debuted at a price of $3,000, but it was removed in early 2025 amid a significant redesign of the Model Y.

The option briefly appeared in Europe in 2024 and was introduced in China in 2021. However, it never gained substantial traction in any of these regions, with reviews indicating that the third row was mainly suitable for small children rather than adults.

At this point, Tesla has not disclosed any specific demand rates for the option, but insights suggest that it simply did not attract a considerable consumer base.

As part of their marketing strategy, Tesla recently sent emails to potential customers teasing the anticipated comeback, stating the new Model Y will be “ready for anything with long range, seating for up to seven and enough room for everyone’s gear.” While this hints at a revival of the third row, it currently remains absent from the online configurator, leaving many prospective buyers in suspense.

Notably, the redesign of the Model Y’s interior—including updates to the second row—raises questions about how these changes could impact the comfort level of the third row. Even if there are improvements, expectations regarding major alterations should be tempered, as the vehicle’s overall size remains consistent.

Looking ahead, Tesla anticipates that the seven-seater option might arrive in Europe and China by late 2025. As the buzz around this feature grows, only time will tell whether it captures the interest of consumers this time around. For now, Tesla enthusiasts and potential buyers will have to wait for further announcements from the company.
