Homeowners looking to invest in solar energy have reason to celebrate, as prices for solar systems have plummeted, reaching record lows in the second half of 2024.
According to EnergySage’s latest Solar & Storage Marketplace Report, the median price for solar-only systems has dropped to $2.65 per watt, down from $2.80 earlier this year.
Meanwhile, solar systems with battery storage are now available for just $2.40 per watt, a significant reduction from $2.59 in the first half of 2024.
Solar System Prices Crash to Record Lows, Making Renewable Energy More Accessible
This decline in pricing can be attributed to several factors. Equipment costs have fallen dramatically, with Wood Mackenzie reporting a staggering 30% year-over-year reduction in residential solar panel prices.
Furthermore, elevated interest rates and stable electricity prices have led to decreased demand, encouraging installers to adopt more competitive pricing strategies. Additionally, regulatory changes in states like California, particularly regarding net billing tariffs, have further pressured installers to lower their prices.
The introduction of Tesla’s Powerwall 3 has also played a key role in the shifting landscape of solar storage costs. This latest version features an integrated inverter, which reallocates some of the expenses from the solar quote to the storage quote, contributing to a trend of lower overall pricing for home solar systems.
Interestingly, advancements in panel efficiency are changing consumer options. In the second half of 2023, 81% of solar quotes included panels rated under 400 watts; by the end of 2024, that statistic plummeted to just 14%.
Higher-output panels mean fewer installations are required, providing homeowners with more power and better returns on investment.
However, the future remains uncertain. As a stockpile of 40-50 gigawatts of solar panels could buffer against price increases in 2025, it may also hinder innovation and complicate supply chains. Homeowners considering solar are encouraged to explore this evolving marketplace to find competitive pricing opportunities and sustainable solutions.
