The 2002 version of The Count of Monte Cristo just landed on Prime Video. Kevin Reynolds directed it, drawing from Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel, and it’s the kind of movie that should hit the spot if you have any affection for old-school swashbucklers.
Reynolds turns Dumas’ story into a tight revenge tale built on wrongful imprisonment, betrayal, hidden treasure, reinvention, and the long-awaited settling of scores. Jim Caviezel plays Edmond Dantès, Guy Pearce is Fernand Mondego, and Henry Cavill shows up early in his career as Albert Mondego.
The movie tracks Edmond from a prison sentence he never deserved to the escape he pulls off with help from Abbé Faria, then jumps ahead 16 years to Paris, where he comes back as the Count of Monte Cristo. From there, Edmond methodically goes after the people who ruined his life, exposing their greed, lies, and corruption piece by piece.
Reynolds keeps the period setting intact, but the movie never feels stiff. It moves fast, the dialogue feels more current than dusty, and that’s a big part of why it still works.
If you like traditional adventure movies powered by momentum, emotion, and revenge, this one’s easy to grab.
The film was made for a reported $35 million and earned about $75.4 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Opening-night audiences gave it an A CinemaScore, and Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars.
You can stream The Count of Monte Cristo on Prime Video now.
