Recent cuts at Microsoft have triggered a wave of cancellations and shocking layoffs within the company. Among the most notable projects that have suffered this blow are Everwild, the MMO from the creators of The Elder Scrolls Online, and Perfect Dark, as well as the closure of The Initiative and hundreds of layoffs at Xbox.
A shooter like no other we have seen
However, not all news is bad. The new project from the legendary creator of DOOM, John Romero, has managed to avoid cancellation, despite the game’s development losing funding. It is alleged that Redmond had been financially supporting the project, a collaboration that was abruptly interrupted, leaving Romero Games in a delicate situation.
In a recent interview, Romero shared exciting news about the revival of his game, which has been completely redesigned. “We are not starting from scratch,” he stated, emphasizing that the team can reuse certain pieces from the previous project in this new indie experience. Although the new title will be “much smaller” than the original, it is expected to offer innovative mechanics and a completely fresh experience for players.
The game will be set in a “crazy” world that promises to be fascinating to explore. Romero described the development philosophy as a journey into a new universe full of surprises, where players will find themselves exploring uncharted paths. According to his words, the gameplay will include elements that will be unprecedented for many, similar to the experience that was had with Elden Ring.
Although not many more details about the title have been revealed yet, John Romero has assured that the team is excited about the new creative direction, and it is expected that more information about this enigmatic project that has managed to survive cancellation will be shared soon.
