Netflix canceled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance in September 2020, just over a year after it first premiered in August 2019. The series was left unfinished after one season, even though it took Jim Henson’s 1982 film The Dark Crystal and opened it up into a larger Thra-set prequel about rebellion against the Skeksis, with Rian, Brea, and Deet starting on separate tracks that eventually meet.
The most likely reasons were the obvious ones: money and sheer difficulty. Reports put the budget at around $97.7 million, with roughly $5.3 million of that going to crew costs, and COVID made a production built around practical puppetry, elaborate sets, visual effects, and a massive team much harder to pull off. Netflix also never shared detailed viewing numbers, so there’s still no clear way to know whether the audience was big enough to justify spending that much.
Good reviews weren’t enough to keep it alive. The show was well received, holds an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and even won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program. If handmade, darker fantasy is your thing, it’s still absolutely worth watching.
The story didn’t stop there, either. It continued in a 12-issue BOOM! Studios comic prequel, and both The Jim Henson Company and director Louis Leterrier have said they’d like to go back to Thra. The series is still available on Netflix.
