Nintendo has now shown off its remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, giving the old Nintendo 64 classic a more modern feel. The best quality-of-life change so far might be the death of Kaepora Gaebora’s dialogue loop. If you used to button-mash through the owl’s advice on N64, you apparently won’t get trapped into hearing the same tutorial all over again. Early previews also point to more expressive character animation, a command-based jump, and easier weapon switching. Small stuff, maybe, but the kind that can make the whole game feel better in your hands without messing up its pacing or atmosphere.

Navi, though, is still the bigger argument if you remember all those “Hey! Listen!” interruptions. According to preview coverage, Nintendo is swapping a lot of them out for a player-triggered hint system called “Navi’s Thoughts” or “Fairy Thoughts.” That seems to build on the Sheikah Stones from the 3DS version, and it lines up with something Shigeru Miyamoto said back in 1999, when he called Navi the game’s biggest weak point because giving her smarter advice was harder to pull off.
If what you want from Ocarina of Time is something that feels timeless instead of just old, this remake looks like an easy one to pick up when it lands. Still, not everyone’s sold. Some fans think cutting the owl loop, changing Navi’s voice actor, and sanding down those rougher bits also takes away part of what made the game itself. Japanese fans seem more positive, especially with voice actor Kaori Mizuhashi returning. Nintendo still hasn’t said when it’s coming out or how the download release will work.
