The first reviews of Civil War place it as one of the best dystopias of recent years

Alex Garland is one of the most surprising film directors of recent times. He is the author behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and what I consider his supreme work: the series Devs. Undoubtedly, he is a science fiction and horror author like few others in Hollywood, and as he releases more films, he is increasingly recognized.

This year has in its hands a feature film that aims to surpass everything done before: Civil War. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Jefferson White, and Wagner Moura, the film takes us to a near future where the United States is immersed in a bloody civil war. There, a team of journalists and war photographers will embark on a road trip towards Washington DC. Their mission: to arrive before the rebel forces assault the White House and seize control from the country’s president. The first reviews of the film have already arrived, and they are excellent.

“One of the best movies of the year”

With 89% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes on its premiere, Civil War is definitely exceeding the expectations that were placed on it. Some of the critics’ comments are as follows:

“Terrifying, even-handed, and captivatingly human, Civil War features intelligent and precise cinematography on an impossible subject” – Rocco T. Thompson, Slant Magazine

“The constant onslaught of premonitory tension and the impressive skill of the documentary style to capture raw horror guarantee a powerful cinematic piece that leaves you breathless” – Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting

“A disturbing sensory experience accompanied by thunderous cacophonies and scenes of war and savagery so vast, intense, and overwhelming that you can practically taste the gunpowder lingering in the air” – Siddhant Adlakha, Inverse

“It is a film about the open question of how much humanity we have left as a species, and that makes it a provocative and exciting film that will stay engraved in your retinas” – Matthew Jackson, AV Club

“With an award-worthy performance by Kirsten Dunst as the protagonist, Civil War is one of the best movies of the year and will likely inspire the necessary conversation when it hits theaters next month” – J Hurtado, Screen Anarchy
