The series The Handmaid’s Tale has concluded its narrative, but the dystopian universe of Gilead will be explored again with the arrival of The Testaments. Based on the eponymous novel by Margaret Atwood, this sequel is set 15 years after the events of the original story and will focus on three main characters, one of whom is the famous Aunt Lydia.
A series where we must expect strong changes
Announced almost six years ago, the series The Testament will bring back Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, while new faces like Chase Infiniti (Agnes) and Lucy Halliday (Daisy) join the cast. The executive producer and showrunner Bruce Miller has stated that the new series will not dictate the events of The Handmaid’s Tale and will offer a different perspective on the oppressive system of Gilead.
Miller emphasizes that The Testaments will focus on power dynamics from the perspective of young women navigating a patriarchal system, exploring the life of Agnes, who is trapped in Gilead, and Daisy, who collaborates with the resistance group Mayday. This approach will provide a fresh perspective by contrasting life at the top of Gilead’s hierarchy with its heartbreaking reality.
The ending of The Handmaid’s Tale made it clear that Gilead, although weakened, still has more story to tell, and fans are eagerly awaiting the development of these characters and their struggles. Although there is still no confirmed release date for The Testaments, production is underway and it will premiere on Hulu. In this regard, rumors suggest that Elisabeth Moss could return as June, despite her character not appearing in Atwood’s novel.
