In the second episode of season 3 of The Mandalorian aired on Disney+, Din Djarin arrives on Mandalore with Grogu to bathe in the living waters of the planet’s mines in order to redeem himself for his “sin” of removing his helmet. However, not everything goes too well for Din Djarin and he ends up being kidnapped, at which point Grogu flees to alert the Mandalorian Bo-Katan to save him.
When Bo-Katan finally arrives with Mando, the Mandalorians arrive with Grogu at the living waters in which Din Djarin must bathe. He does so in order to finally stop being an apostate. But everything gets complicated when a gigantic creature sinks the protagonist played by Pedro Pascal. It is quickly discovered that it is a Mythosaur, an ancient creature that lives in the place. But what exactly is the Mythosaur?
What does the Mythosaurs mean to the Mandalorians?
As explained in the series, mythosaurs were giant Mandalorian creatures believed to have been domesticated and ridden by the ancient Mandalorians. These are prehistoric animals of great importance to the Mandalorians. In fact, images of the creatures’ skulls were used as part of Mandalorian iconography, and even appear on their armor.
The funny thing is that the Mythosaurs were thought to have become extinct many years ago, but in the last chapter the two Mandalorians discover that, at least the one hiding in the living waters, is still alive and kicking, even after the extinction of the planet. Bo-Katan is in charge of telling Mano the story of the dinosaur:
“These mines date back to the era of early Mandalore. According to ancient folklore, the mines were once a lair of a Mythosaurus. Mandalor the Great is said to have tamed the mythical beast. The legend that explains why its skull became the symbol of our planet.”
The legend of the Mythosaurs is not only of importance in this episode, but is something that has been dropped in on more occasions throughout the series. In season 1, Kuiil is disappointed when Din Djarin is unable to ride on a blurrg, and tells him the following, “Your ancestors rode the great Mythosaurs, surely you can ride this young cub”.
He also appears in The Book of Boba Fett. The armorer tells him “Songs of eons past foretold that the Mythosaur would rise to herald a new age of Mandalore.” However, when Mando hears the ancient prophecy about his planet, he tells him that it is just an ancient legend of the Mandalorians. But the discovery of this prehistoric animal could be very significant.
After realizing that the planet’s atmosphere is not toxic as they thought, and discovering that even the Mythosaurs is still intact, this symbol could mean the reconstruction of the planet in the future. In addition, the role of Bo-Katan, who after his years of loneliness wants to rebuild the planet, could be very significant in the coming seasons.
Many fans, in fact, have wondered if the Mythosaurs’ aggressive reaction is because he sensed the presence of the “true ruler” of Mandalore. Also, considering that the protagonist already got hold of the dark saber belonging to the Mandalorian chief, this could mean a lot more for the future.
The groundwork for this new season is beginning to be laid. And, while the previous ones were about Grogu’s story and how a mercenary could interact with this creature, it seems that the next episodes may feature a much more “cinematic” plot.
As far as we know, the series will have more than four seasons, and we are still in the third. It is more than likely, given the clues we have and the presence of the Mythosaurs, that the next thing we will see is the reconstruction of Mandalore and the struggle for the power of the planet. But for that we still have many chapters to go.
