The movie you don't expect this year is a post-apocalyptic musical with Tilda Swinton

Today, in weird movies that no one really knows why they exist: The End. The first foray into fiction film by documentarian Joshua Oppenheimer is a post-apocalyptic musical. And as if this idea already seemed strange, it also features Tilda Swinton as the main protagonist. What could go wrong?

In this story set decades after the end of the world, a wealthy family lives confined in a luxurious bunker inside a salt mine, surrounded by the echoes of a world that no longer exists. The life of this family –composed of Mother (Tilda Swinton), Father (Michael Shannon), and Son (George MacKay)– takes a radical turn with the arrival of a mysterious young woman (Moses Ingram), completely destabilizing their routine. Its trailer only further complicates the premise:

Sorrows disappear while singing

Oppenheimer is known for the harrowing Danish documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, but in this case, he not only directs but has also co-written the script and the lyrics for the songs in The End. In the trailer, we can see Swinton and her companions singing with an intensity that, even in the apparent peace of the bunker, hints at an emotionally devastated world. We will see what we encounter.
