During 2023 it has become clear that the Javis are the most important duo of Spanish directors in recent years. Their success with La Mesías, the series from Movistar Plus that became our favorite of last year, has shown that they are a creative force that goes far beyond what we saw in Paquita Salas, and now they are not alone in their work.
Recently, the Javis have also become producers of projects that they do not directly direct, but that do have their approval. This is the case of Cardo, from Vestidas de azul (sequel to Veneno) and now, of a new series that has just been announced for Netflix.

The series that no one expected but that we all hope for
After directing Paquita Salas, the Javis return to Netflix with Superestar, a new fiction directed by Nacho Vigalondo, director of El vecino (also from Netflix), of Our Flag Means Death and of international films like Colossal or Open Windows. The filmmaker was even nominated for an Oscar in 2004 for his short film 7:35 in the morning, so it is not insignificant that he has joined the Javis in this project.
Superstar focuses on the artistic beginnings of singer Yurena, who became known as Tamara in her early days. Yurena was a true sensation in the 2000s and she rocked it like no one else with her song No cambié. But her story is much more than that, and we will soon discover it with the series.

“There is nothing we like more than pop and looking back at the history of our country,” explains Javier Calvo. “If there is a wild era where everything was possible, that is the era of ‘tamarismo’, where the most unexpected protagonists monopolized hours and hours of television.”
“In Superestar we wanted to understand, humanize and respect a series of characters that are usually mistreated, and along the way we have created a dump truck of fantasy, magic and madness unlike anything we have seen before,” adds Nacho Vigalondo.
