Marvel Studios is facing the most complex moment in its history. For over a decade, the company delighted its audience with movies featuring all their characters, and until recently, the response couldn’t have been better. However, since starting to release series on Disney Plus and introducing various secondary characters, things have taken a turn for the worse for Marvel… and their latest movie has confirmed it.
Goodbye to Kang the Conqueror?
“The Marvels is the first box office failure for Marvel in a long time, and its critical reception hasn’t been good either. This follows a trend from previous films and might continue in the future. Certainly, they now have another big problem on their hands: what will happen with Kang the Conqueror.
Since they wrapped up with Thanos, Marvel set out to introduce another major villain for the studio and they decided to place their confidence in Jonathan Majors’ Kang. But this didn’t go well: the character didn’t turn out to be as menacing as they thought and, to make matters worse, the actor was accused of misogynistic violence.”
This has led to a shift in their strategy regarding Kang, and even though the upcoming Marvel movie was titled Avengers: Kang’s Dynasty, everything seems to indicate that the studio is going in a different direction. This is evident because they’ve just replaced the director of the film, Daniel Cretton.
The official version is that Cretton has left the movie to focus on other studio projects: Shang-Chi 2 (he directed the first one) and the Wonder Man series. However, all signs point to the fact that this is because they are going to make a different movie… with a different villain. The recent dismissal of Jeff Loveness from the film, the writer who had mapped out everything about Kang so far, also adds to this debacle. So, it’s pretty clear: it seems like we’ll be forgetting about Kang, at least for a while.
