With the launch of iOS 18.1, Apple has introduced a new Apple Intelligence feature called “Reduce Interruptions.” This focus mode allows us to better manage our notifications by acting as an intelligent filter between notifications that truly require our attention and those that can wait.
Too often, staying focused without constant interruptions from notifications is quite a challenge, especially in a daily routine where we receive alerts from multiple apps and contacts throughout the day. The arrival of the Reduce Interruptions Mode is a very interesting solution to this situation, as it offers us a middle ground between receiving all notifications or receiving none.
In its default setting, the Reduce Interruptions Mode is positioned between the Do Not Disturb mode and the traditional notifications mode, allowing only those alerts that are truly important at the moment to pass through. Apple has designed this mode to prioritize relevant messages, such as schedule changes, urgent work communications, and time-sensitive alerts. Meanwhile, less urgent notifications are grouped to be reviewed when we have time. The entire process is done intelligently and according to the content of the notifications, thanks to Apple Intelligence.
How to set up Reduce Interruptions mode
Setting up this mode is really simple. We will start from the Settings app and follow these steps:
- We open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
- We enter Focus Modes.
- We select “Reduce Interruptions.”
- Upon entering, we will see options to customize which people and apps can send us notifications. Here we will select the contacts that can bypass the filter and the apps that will send us immediate notifications.
Let’s note that the “Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing” option is always activated. While in other modes it is optional, here we will use it to allow Apple Intelligence (which already has a confirmed arrival date for Europe) to automatically filter non-urgent notifications and silence them, giving us only what is important.
As with any focus mode, we can enable and disable the mode quickly from the Control Center. We just need to long press on the modes icon and then select “Reduce Interruptions.”
The magic of Apple Intelligence in Notification Management
The highlight of the Reduce Interruptions Mode is its ability to automatically distinguish between what is important and what is not. We are not talking about a set of rigid rules that can classify content, we are talking about the system being able to understand the content and context and decide on whether to let a certain notification through or hold it back.
With this tool, Apple offers us an effective way to be more present in the moment, avoiding unnecessary distractions and allowing us to manage our time more effectively. For when we need to be available for certain people or applications, but without being constantly bombarded, this mode is a tool that we can adjust to our needs. A mode that reduces distractions while keeping us alert to the most important things.
