A report to better understand Apple Intelligence

Thanks to large language models that run directly on our devices, Apple Intelligence can generate language, create images, perform actions in different applications, and interpret personal context. Its goal is to simplify and speed up our daily tasks while maintaining the privacy focus that Apple is known for.

When the local model is not enough to complete a request, our iPhone reaches out to Apple’s cloud. Through Private Cloud Compute, Apple has developed a hybrid technology that allows data to be processed securely. Only the information strictly necessary to complete the request is processed, and once this is done, it is deleted. Thus, our data cannot even be stored, as not even Apple has access to it.

For those of us who want to closely understand how Apple Intelligence is used in our devices, Apple has added the option to generate an Apple Intelligence Report. This report provides us with a detailed record of all the requests our device has sent to Private Cloud Compute over a specific period, allowing us to have a clear view of the interactions between us and Apple Intelligence.

To generate our own report, just follow these steps:

  1. We open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
  2. We enter Privacy and Security
  3. We tap on Apple Intelligence Report, which we will find at the bottom of the menu.
  4. We choose the report period. We can select between two options: the last 15 minutes or the last 7 days, or also disable the option.
  5. We tap on Export Activity.

This will generate a text file that we can open with any text editor or file reader application.

What information does the report contain?

The file we obtain details the requests sent to Private Cloud Compute in the selected period, giving us an insight into the recent activity of Apple Intelligence. This level of transparency is uncommon in the industry, where such detailed and accessible data is rarely offered to users.

We can see the date of the interaction, the contents of the question, as well as the content of the answer, all properly organized. With this, we can better understand how and when PCC is used, which translates into a more transparent and secure relationship with this technology.

The Apple Intelligence Report feature (which will arrive in Europe along with Apple Intelligence in April) is a clear example of Apple’s commitment to privacy and transparency. Through this tool, we have the ability to review and better understand how Apple Intelligence interacts with our devices and how data is used. With a combination of on-device and cloud processing, Apple offers us an optimized artificial intelligence experience without compromising our privacy. Something we can check whenever we want.
