We have been delighted with top-notch science fiction series and movies for years. From the gems of Apple TV+, which are not few, to the great films by directors like Denis Villeneuve or Gareth Edwards, we are undoubtedly in a peak moment for the genre. But the truth is that very little of all this would be possible without a specific movie: Ex Machina.
Released in 2014 by Alex Garland, director of Civil War, the film recently produced by A24 and starring Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac, and Domhnall Gleeson laid the groundwork for many subsequent episodes of Black Mirror and many other films like M3GAN. It was Garland’s directorial debut, and yet it didn’t have much box office success, as it was released at the same time as Interstellar. But the truth is that it is worth reclaiming, and thanks to Netflix we can now watch it at any time.

Ex Machina focuses on a young programmer, Caleb, who is invited by the eccentric CEO Nathan to conduct a Turing Test on Ava, an advanced artificial intelligence with human-like appearance. As Caleb interacts with Ava, he begins to question the ethics of the experiment and Nathan’s true intentions, making it clear that there is much hidden behind his facade.
