There are manga series about all sorts of things, even those you wouldn’t imagine. This time, we’re not talking about anything outlandish but rather about the most mundane things. A manga about high-end wines, sommeliers, and everything related to them might not sound like it could be a big hit. However, if we were to think this way, quite legitimately, we would be mistaken. Because not only is there a manga that has achieved great success with precisely that theme, but it has also premiered a sequel today.
That is the case of Drops of Gods, a manga by Tadashi Agi (a pseudonym behind which the writers Shin Kibayashi and Yuko Kibayashi are) and Sho Oshikami. Published between November 2004 and June 2014, with 44 volumes, the manga followed the story of Shizuku Kanzaki, the son of an illustrious wine critic who recently died. But in order to enjoy his inheritance he must compete with his father’s twelve adopted children in a competition where he must identify thirteen specific wines that he described in his last wills that he described as The Drops of God.
A mix of detective thriller, drama and genuine wine manga, it is a profound story, with rich and profound characters, that delves into the history and particularities of wine with as much interest as its characters. Something that has led it to have a celebrated live-action adaptation on Apple TV + this year, and also a sequel.
This manga sequel is called “Kami no Shizuku – Deuxième” and is once again written by Tadashi Agi and illustrated by Sho Oshikami. It’s worth noting that this sequel will consist of only two volumes. The story will follow Tomine Issei, the daughter of one of the original series’ biggest rivals. It’s an intriguing way to continue the life of a manga that has currently sold fifteen million copies worldwide.
